However, many cases particularly chronic ones, or those with implants, or dental-origin cases require at least some surgical component. Tooth extraction, wound debridement, implant removal, or removal of sequestrae are all procedures that may be necessary alongside antibiotic therapy. Your vet will assess which approach fits your cat's specific situation.

    How do I know if the osteomyelitis treatment is working?
    Your cat should gradually show less pain, stop or reduce the fever, start eating better, and begin using the affected limb more over the first 2–4 weeks of treatment. The draining tract, if present, should reduce in output and begin to close. Repeat X-rays at the 4–6 week mark will show whether bone is healing (new bone formation, resolution of lysis) or whether the infection is persisting. If the cat is not improving clinically within 2–3 weeks, the vet may need to re-evaluate the antibiotic choice, perform a culture if not already done, or consider surgical options.
