    Paracetamol — sold in India as Crocin, Calpol, Dolo, and dozens of generic brands — is the most common painkiller in every Indian medicine cabinet. It is lethally hepatotoxic to cats. The potentially lethal dose for cats starts at just 10mg per kilogram of body weight. A standard Crocin tablet contains 500mg. For an average 4–5 kg cat, even a quarter of a tablet can be deadly.

    When a well-meaning owner gives their sick cat a piece of Crocin because “she seemed to have a fever” — the cat’s liver begins to fail within hours. The toxic metabolite that forms — N-acetyl-p-benzoquinoneimine — destroys liver cells and red blood cells simultaneously. The cat’s blood literally loses its ability to carry oxygen. By the time you see symptoms — blue or brown-tinged gums, rapid breathing, jaundice, collapse — the damage may already be irreversible.

    Myth Correction: “I Gave My Dog Crocin and He Was Fine, So My Cat Can Have It Too”

The toxic dose for dogs is 7–10 times higher than for cats. What’s a mild painkiller for your dog is a lethal poison for your cat.     Essential Oil Diffusers — The Trendy Liver Toxin Nobody Suspects

    The oils: Tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint, citrus (lemon, orange, bergamot), cinnamon, pine, wintergreen, clove, ylang ylang, sweet birch, and pennyroyal — all potentially hepatotoxic to cats.

    The mechanism is insidious. Your essential oil diffuser fills your room with aerosolised oil particles. Your cat breathes them in.              If you must use a phenol-based cleaner: Mop with the cleaner, then mop again with plain water to rinse the residue. Keep the cat out of the room until the floor is fully dry.

    Mosquito Repellents — Good Knight, All-Out, Coils, and the Year-Round Exposure Problem

    In an enclosed Indian apartment with windows closed and air conditioning running, the pyrethroid concentration from a single mosquito plug-in vaporiser can reach levels that stress a cat’s liver over chronic exposure. Cats are significantly more sensitive to pyrethroids than dogs — the same glucuronidation deficiency that makes paracetamol lethal makes pyrethroid metabolism slower and less efficient in cats.

             If using a plug-in vaporiser in a shared room, ensure windows are partially open for ventilation. An enclosed room with no airflow concentrates the chemicals.

    Agarbatti, Incense, and Dhoop — Navigating Cultural Practice and Cat Safety

    Daily incense burning in enclosed spaces creates particulate matter that the cat’s respiratory and liver systems process constantly. The smoke contains a complex mix of volatile organic compounds, some of which are metabolised by the liver — or in cats, fail to be fully metabolised and accumulate.
