Anxiety Care For Dogs

Calming Tablets and Anxiety Care for Dogs

An anxious dog does not always look frightened. Some hide and shake, some pace and pant, some chew the door frame, and some bark for four hours the moment you leave. Animeal stocks calming tablets, drops, sprays and calming collars for dogs, alongside a full veterinary pharmacy for the cases that need more. We are a licensed veterinary pharmacy, so prescription items are checked by a pharmacist before dispatch. Free delivery on orders above ₹499, cash on delivery across India, and same-day delivery in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

How to Calm a Dog During Fireworks and Diwali

For a lot of Indian dogs this is the hardest fortnight of the year. Crackers start days before Diwali and continue for days after, at unpredictable times, and a noise-phobic dog spends the whole period braced for the next one.

Start preparing two weeks before, not on the night. Calming supplements need one to two weeks to build up, and a prescription option needs a vet appointment. The single most common mistake is leaving it until the evening it starts.

What to do on the night:

  • Build a den before dark. An interior room with no windows if possible, a covered crate or a space under a bed, with familiar bedding. Let your dog choose it, then leave the door open so they can go in and out.
  • Mask the sound, do not cancel it. A fan, an air conditioner, a TV or steady music covers the sharp edge of a bang better than silence does. Silence makes each cracker louder by contrast.
  • Close windows and draw curtains before it gets dark. Flashes matter as much as noise.
  • Walk early. Get the exercise done well before sunset, and keep your dog indoors and on a lead near open doors. Frightened dogs bolt, and more pets go missing during Diwali than at any other time of year.
  • Check the ID tag and microchip details now, while it is calm.
  • Do not punish the fear, and do not force your dog out of hiding. Comforting a frightened dog does not reinforce the fear, which is an old myth. Sit with them if they want company, leave them be if they do not.
  • Feed earlier than usual. An anxious dog often will not eat once it starts.

What not to do: never leave a noise-phobic dog alone during crackers, never tie them up outside, and never give a sedative from your own medicine box. See the safety section below.

What Is Your Dog Actually Anxious About?

Anxiety is not one condition, and the trigger decides the treatment.

Noise phobia

Fireworks, thunder, construction, traffic. Usually gets worse with age rather than better, because each bad episode reinforces the last. Manageable, and worth treating early.

Separation anxiety

Barking, howling, destruction near doors and windows, accidents in a house-trained dog, all starting within about 20 minutes of you leaving. A camera settles the question quickly. This one needs behaviour work as much as medication, because the dog is learning something every time it happens.

Travel and vet visits

Drooling, whining, vomiting in the car, or panic at the clinic door. Often specific rather than general, and often the easiest kind to treat, because it is predictable and short.

New home or rescue

A newly adopted dog needs two to three weeks to decompress. Keep the world small at first: one room, a predictable routine, low-key introductions. Most settling problems are impatience rather than anxiety.

Senior dogs

Pacing at night, staring at walls, getting stuck in corners, waking confused. This can be canine cognitive dysfunction, which is a medical condition with real treatment options rather than just old age. Worth a vet visit rather than a calming supplement.

Pain

Do not skip this one. A dog that suddenly becomes restless, clingy, snappy or reluctant to settle is very often in pain rather than anxious. Any sudden behaviour change in an adult dog deserves a vet check first.

Calming Chews, Tablets, Sprays or Collars: What Works

Format matters less than people think, but it changes how easy the product is to actually use.

  • Calming tablets and chews. The most common option. Both work the same way, and a chew is simply easier to give to a dog that spits out tablets. Look for L-tryptophan, hemp, or milk-protein derivatives. They take one to two weeks to build up, so they suit ongoing anxiety and planned events rather than a sudden fright.
  • Drops and liquids. Easy to mix into food, and easier to adjust than a tablet.
  • Calming sprays. Sprayed on bedding, in the crate or in the car 15 minutes before, never directly on the dog.
  • Calming collars. Release continuously for several weeks, which suits a dog who is anxious most of the time rather than occasionally.
  • Prescription medication. For genuine phobia and severe separation anxiety, vets use trazodone, gabapentin, fluoxetine or clomipramine. The situational ones work within hours, the long-term ones take four to six weeks. All need a prescription and a proper assessment.

Two honest points. First, supplements take the edge off mild to moderate anxiety. They will not stop a full panic response in a severely noise-phobic dog, and expecting them to leads people to conclude that nothing works. Second, for separation anxiety in particular, **no product fixes it alone**. Medication makes the dog calm enough to learn; the behaviour work is what actually resolves it.

On True Tails calming chews: that is a US brand and it is not distributed in India. The active ingredients people buy it for, melatonin, valerian and hemp, are available here in tablet, drop and chew form from brands that are properly imported and stocked.

Never Give a Dog Human Sedatives or Anxiety Medicine

  • No human anxiety tablets. Alprazolam, clobazam, diazepam and similar are dosed for adults and are not interchangeable with veterinary use. Some dogs react in the opposite direction and become more agitated, not less.
  • No antihistamines as a sedative. A common piece of advice online. It is unreliable in dogs and does nothing for genuine fear.
  • No alcohol. It circulates every Diwali as a folk remedy. It is toxic to dogs.
  • No leftover medication from another pet. Wrong drug, wrong weight, wrong dose.
  • Do not use essential oil diffusers around pets, and be especially careful if you also have a cat, as many oils are toxic to cats.

If your dog needs something stronger than a supplement, that conversation is worth having with your vet in advance, not at 9pm on Diwali night.

When to See a Vet

Book an appointment if your dog is injuring itself trying to escape, breaking teeth or nails on doors and crates, refusing food for more than a day, having accidents indoors after being reliably house-trained, or if anxiety is getting worse year on year. Also for any sudden behaviour change in an adult dog, because pain and illness look a lot like anxiety.

Our Parel branch behind KEM Hospital is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including through Diwali.

Dog Anxiety FAQs

How do I calm my dog during fireworks and Diwali?

Start two weeks early, because calming supplements take that long to build up. On the night, build a den in an interior room, mask the sound with a fan or TV rather than leaving silence, close curtains before dark, walk early, and never leave a noise-phobic dog alone or tied outside. Check the ID tag now, because more pets go missing during Diwali than at any other time.

Do calming tablets and chews work for dogs?

For mild to moderate anxiety, yes. Tablets and chews work the same way, and the choice between them is simply whether your dog takes tablets. They contain L-tryptophan, hemp or milk-protein derivatives and take one to two weeks to build up. They will not stop a full panic response in a severely phobic dog, which is when a vet-prescribed option is the right answer.

What can I give my dog for anxiety without a prescription?

Calming supplements in tablet, chew or drop form, calming sprays for bedding and crates, and calming collars. Never give a dog human anxiety medicine or sedatives, and never alcohol, which circulates as a Diwali folk remedy and is toxic. Anything stronger than a supplement needs a vet.

What do vets prescribe for dog anxiety?

Trazodone and gabapentin for situational anxiety such as fireworks, travel and vet visits, working within hours. Fluoxetine or clomipramine for long-term anxiety, taking four to six weeks to reach full effect. All require a prescription and a proper assessment of what is actually triggering the anxiety.

How do I treat separation anxiety in my dog?

Medication alone does not fix it. The pattern to look for is barking, destruction near exits and accidents starting within 20 minutes of you leaving, which a camera confirms quickly. Treatment is gradual departure training, and where anxiety is severe, medication that makes the dog calm enough to learn. Speak to your vet or a qualified behaviourist.

Is True Tails available in India?

No. True Tails is a US brand and is not distributed in India. The ingredients it is known for, melatonin, valerian root and hemp, are available here in tablets, chews and drops from brands imported and stocked for the Indian market.
