What is in the Catsan Hygiene 5kg pack
Catsan Hygiene is a mineral granule litter. The granules are pale, fairly coarse, and unscented. It is a non clumping litter, which is the single most important thing to understand about it: urine soaks through the granules and spreads into the bed of litter rather than binding into a ball you can scoop out.
What that means in practice is that you scoop solids daily and you cannot scoop urine at all. The wet litter stays in the tray until you change the whole tray. Catsan's granules are built to absorb and hold that moisture, which is why the surface can look and feel dry for a while after the tray is genuinely soiled.
The 5kg pack is the size sold in India. For one cat using one tray, a 5kg pack is roughly a fortnight to three weeks of use at a sensible tray depth, so most single-cat homes are buying it twice a month. Two cats sharing a tray will get through it considerably faster, and two cats really should have three trays anyway.

Non clumping versus clumping: what actually changes in your week
This is the choice that matters, and Catsan sits firmly on the non clumping side of it.
International Cat Care's guidance on litter trays is direct about the consequence. A tray should be "completely cleaned out and washed (with new litter replacing any soiled litter) either every 2-4 weeks if you are using clumping litter, and weekly if you are using non-clumping litter". That is a real difference in labour: roughly four full tray changes a month against one or two.
The same guidance notes that "litter that clumps when soiled is easier to remove, keeping the litter clean and making the tray more inviting to use". The point there is not tidiness. Cats that find a tray unpleasant start going elsewhere, and inappropriate urination is one of the most common reasons cats are surrendered. A tray your cat willingly uses is worth more than a few rupees saved per kilogram.
Where does that leave Catsan? Honestly: it is a competent non clumping litter, and non clumping litter is more work and, per month of actual use, often not cheaper. Because you replace the whole tray weekly rather than topping up, your real monthly consumption is higher than the bag price suggests. Work out your cost per kilogram, multiply by how much a full tray takes, then multiply by four. Compare that number to a clumping litter changed fortnightly. For a lot of households the clumping litter wins on both time and money.
Catsan's genuine advantages are that it is unscented, that the granules are large enough to track less across the floor than fine clay, and that some cats simply prefer the texture and will not accept anything else. If your cat is one of those, none of the arithmetic above matters. Cats that like their tray are not a problem to be optimised.
Unscented cat litter, dust, and what we are not going to claim
Catsan Hygiene is unscented, and that is a real point in its favour. International Cat Care notes that "the ideal substrate to meet your cat's preferences is likely a fine sand-like litter" and that cats are far more sensitive to smell than we are. A heavy lemon or floral fragrance is pleasant at human nose height and overwhelming at cat nose height. If your cat has started avoiding a tray after you switched to a scented litter, switching back to unscented is the first thing to try.
What we are not going to tell you is that a low dust litter protects your cat's lungs. You will see that claim on a great many litter listings, including, until we edit it, on our own. The honest position is that it is unproven.
Feline asthma is real and reasonably common. Cornell University's Feline Health Center states that "asthma is a disease of the lower airways of the lungs that affects between 1 and 5% of cats". But on managing it through the home environment, the same source is careful: "Other approaches are sometimes recommended because they are beneficial in human asthma patients, including purifying indoor air and avoiding allergens, but they have not been rigorously tested or proven to work in feline asthma patients."
So: choosing a low dust litter is a reasonable, low-cost thing to do, and if your cat coughs it is a sensible change to try. It is not a treatment. If your cat is coughing, wheezing, breathing with an open mouth, or crouching with its neck extended, that is a veterinary visit, not a litter decision. Open-mouth breathing in a cat is an emergency. Cat litter for kittens and multi-cat homes
Kittens explore trays with their mouths as well as their paws, and very young kittens sometimes eat litter. That is the main reason people ask about non clumping litter for kittens: a clumping bentonite granule swells when wet, and a kitten that swallows a mouthful is theoretically at risk. Documented cases are rare, but the caution is widespread among breeders and it costs nothing to follow. If you have a kitten under about four months, a non clumping mineral litter like Catsan, or a paper-based litter, is the conservative choice. Once the kitten stops mouthing the litter, you can move to clumping.
Tray depth matters more than most people expect. International Cat Care reports that "cats prefer a depth of approximately 3cm of litter in their tray". Deeper is not better; it wastes litter and many cats dislike sinking into it. Measure it once with a ruler and you will use less litter and get fewer complaints from your cat.
For multi-cat homes the standing rule is one tray per cat plus one, placed in different rooms rather than lined up together. Two trays side by side count as one tray to a cat that is being bullied away from them. If you have two cats and one tray, that is far more likely to be behind a litter box problem than the brand of litter in it.
Transition slowly whichever way you are switching. Mix roughly a quarter new litter into the old for a few days, then half, then three quarters. Cats that get a tray full of unfamiliar substrate overnight sometimes decide the bath mat is a safer bet, and that is a much harder problem to undo than a slow changeover.
How to run a non clumping litter tray properly
If you are using Catsan or any other non clumping litter, this is the routine that keeps it working.
- Fill the clean tray to about 3cm depth. Level it rather than heaping it in the middle.
- Scoop solid waste out every day, ideally twice. Non clumping litter gives you no way to remove urine, so solids are the only thing daily scooping can catch.
- Stir the bed lightly when you scoop. This moves damp granules away from the surface and keeps the top layer usable.
- Add a small top-up of fresh litter to replace what you removed, keeping the depth near 3cm.
- Empty the entire tray once a week. Throw away all of the litter, including the parts that look clean.
- Wash the tray with hot water and unscented soap. Avoid anything containing phenol, and never use a pine or coal-tar disinfectant, which are toxic to cats.
- Dry the tray fully before refilling. Damp plastic holds smell and encourages the litter to stick.
- Refill to 3cm and put the tray back in exactly the same place. Cats find moved trays unsettling.
If you are doing all of that and the tray still smells within two or three days, the tray is too small, there are too few trays, or you have a cat with a urinary problem producing more urine than usual. The third possibility is worth a vet visit, particularly if you are also seeing straining, frequent short visits, or blood.
Getting rid of used litter safely
Nobody writes about this and everybody has to do it, so here is the short version for an Indian flat.
Do not flush cat litter down the toilet. Mineral litters like Catsan are clay-based granules that do not break down in water, and they will block a drain. Clumping bentonite is worse, because it swells. Even litters sold as flushable are a poor idea on Indian building plumbing, which is generally narrower and flatter than the systems those claims were written for.
Bag the waste. Scoop into a bag, tie it, and put it in your dry waste, not your wet or compost stream. Cat waste is not suitable for household composting because the temperatures reached are not high enough to deal with what may be in it. If your building segregates waste, tell your housekeeping staff that this bag is dry waste so it does not end up in the wet bin.
Handle the weekly full change with a little care. Tip the tray into a bag rather than scraping it out in a cloud, wash your hands afterwards, and if the tray has gone a long time between changes, do the emptying somewhere ventilated rather than in a closed bathroom.
One specific caution if someone in the household is pregnant. Cat faeces can carry the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. The US Centers for Disease Control advises that "If you have a cat, change the litter box daily", and explains why daily matters: the parasite does not become infectious for one to five days after the cat sheds it. So a tray emptied every day is a much lower risk than one left for a week, which is another argument for daily scooping on a non clumping litter.
The CDC guidance does not say a pregnant person must give up their cat, and neither do we. It sets out precautions and suggests asking your own doctor about anything further. Common obstetric practice in India and elsewhere is to hand the tray job to someone else during pregnancy, or to use disposable gloves and wash thoroughly afterwards. Ask your doctor rather than a pet shop, ours included. What we will say confidently is that rehoming a cat because of a pregnancy is advice people are still wrongly given, and it is not what the public health guidance actually asks for.
Buy a small dustbin with a lid and keep it beside the tray. It sounds trivial and it is the single change that makes the daily scoop actually happen, which matters more for odour than any product you can buy.
