Nappies for Dogs with Incontinence
A dog that has started leaking, or an old dog that no longer makes it to the door, is a hard thing to live with and most people put up with it far longer than they need to. A nappy solves the mess today. Animeal stocks canine diapers in male and female fits from small to extra large, plus waste bags and scoops. We are a licensed veterinary pharmacy, so the first section below is about why your dog is leaking, because that part matters more than the nappy.
Incontinence Is a Symptom, Not Old Age
If your dog has recently started leaking, get a urine test before you accept it. Owners are told constantly that this is just what happens to old dogs. Often it is not, and several of the real causes are straightforward to treat.
- Urinary tract infection. The most common cause and the easiest to fix. A course of antibiotics and it is gone
- Weak bladder sphincter after spaying. Very common in spayed females and it usually responds well to medication. Many owners spend years on nappies for something a daily tablet would have controlled
- Bladder stones or crystals
- Kidney disease or diabetes. Both make a dog drink and pass much more urine. If your dog is emptying the water bowl more than it used to, say so to the vet
- Arthritis. Sometimes the bladder is fine and the dog simply cannot get up and out in time. That is a pain problem wearing an incontinence disguise
- Canine cognitive dysfunction in a genuinely old dog, where the dog forgets the routine
A nappy manages the symptom. It treats nothing. Use one while you find out what is going on, not instead of finding out. If the leaking started suddenly, if there is blood, if your dog is straining, or if it is drinking noticeably more, that is a vet visit this week rather than an order for more nappies.
If a cause is found, the products for it are in Urinary & Renal Care and Veterinary Diets.

Male and Female Dogs Need Different Nappies
This is the single most important thing to get right, and it is why our product names carry two letters.
| Code | Means | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| MD | Male dog | A wrap that goes around the belly, called a belly band. It covers only the front, because that is where a male dog needs it. It leaves the back end open |
| FD | Female dog | A full nappy with a hole for the tail, covering the whole back end |
Buy the wrong one and it does not work. A belly band on a female dog covers nothing useful. A full nappy on a male dog is more material than the job needs and is more likely to slip.
Female dog diapers are also what you want for a bitch in season, which is the other main reason people buy them. Same product, different reason.
Which Size?
Measure the waist, do not guess from the breed. Put a tape measure around the narrowest part of the dog's middle, just in front of the back legs, and buy to that number. Two dogs of the same breed can be two sizes apart.
If your dog is between sizes, go up. A nappy that is slightly loose can be helped with the tape tabs. One that is too tight rubs, and a dog that finds it uncomfortable will get it off within the hour.
We stock every female size from small to extra large, so dog diapers for small dogs and for large breeds are both covered. The male range currently runs small, medium and extra large.
How to Use a Dog Nappy Without Hurting the Skin
This is the part nobody tells you and it is the part that goes wrong. Urine on skin causes scalding, and scalded skin gets infected. On a dog with fur it can happen under a nappy in a few hours without you seeing it.
- Change it as soon as it is wet. Not on a schedule, not twice a day. A wet nappy left on is worse than no nappy
- Wipe the skin and dry it properly at every change. Plain water and a soft cloth is enough. Dry fully, especially in skin folds
- Look at the skin every time. If you see redness, a rash or bald patches, stop using the nappy and call us or your vet. That is scald and it needs treating
- Give the dog nappy-free hours every day, on a washable mat, so the skin breathes
- Trim the fur around the area. It stays cleaner and dries faster
- Never leave a nappy on overnight without checking unless your vet has said it is fine
If your dog keeps pulling the nappy off, the usual culprits are a bad fit or a sore patch underneath. Check the skin first before you assume it is behaviour.
Disposable or Washable?
Disposable nappies are what most people use. They are quicker, more absorbent, and there is no laundry. Ours come 10 or 12 to a pack, and a dog that is properly incontinent goes through several a day, so budget by the week rather than by the pack.
Washable pants cost more once and nothing after that. They suit a dog that needs one only occasionally, a bitch in season, or an owner managing long-term costs. You need at least three so there is always a dry one. We carry the Trixie washable protective pant, currently out of stock, and can source it on request.
Waste Bags, Scoops and Cleaning Up
The rest of this collection is the everyday side of the job. Waste bags from M-Pets and Trixie, scented and unscented, in packs of 60 and 80. Poop scoops from M-Pets, Trixie and Smarty Pet, including folding ones for walks. A training spray to mark the spot you want the dog to use.
For accidents indoors, a normal floor cleaner is not enough. Household cleaners cover the smell for you but leave the part a dog can still smell, and a dog returns to the place it can smell. What removes it is an enzymatic cleaner, which breaks the compounds down rather than masking them. Those are in Cleaning Products. If you want a dog poop cleaner or a dog poop remover that actually stops repeat accidents in the same corner, that is the type to look for.
Never use anything containing ammonia on a dog accident. Urine already smells of ammonia, so to the dog you have just marked the spot again.
Pee Pads for Older Dogs and Puppies
Pee pads suit two situations: a puppy that is not yet vaccinated or toilet trained, and an older dog that cannot hold on through the night. Used with a nappy, a pad under the dog's bed catches what gets past.
Our training pads are currently out of stock in every size. We would rather say that than let you find out at checkout. Tell us the size and pack count you need and we will source them, using the block below.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do dog nappies stop incontinence?
No. They contain the urine so your floors and furniture stay clean. They do nothing about the cause. If your dog has recently started leaking, get a urine test, because a bladder infection or a weak sphincter after spaying are both common and both treatable.
What is the difference between MD and FD diapers?
MD is for a male dog and is a belly band that wraps around the middle, covering only the front. FD is for a female dog and is a full nappy with a tail hole. They are not interchangeable and buying the wrong one means it does not work.
What size dog diaper do I need?
Measure around the narrowest part of your dog's waist, just in front of the back legs, and buy to that measurement rather than to the breed. If your dog falls between two sizes, go up. Too tight rubs and comes off.
How often should I change a dog nappy?
As soon as it is wet, not on a schedule. Urine on skin causes scalding within hours, and scalded skin gets infected. Wipe and dry the skin at every change, check for redness, and give the dog nappy-free time each day.
Can I use human baby nappies on a dog?
People do it as a stopgap by cutting a tail hole, and it is not ideal. The shape is wrong, it leaks at the back, and it is more likely to twist and rub. For a male dog it does not work at all, because the absorbent part is in the wrong place. Use a proper canine nappy if you can.
My dog keeps pulling the nappy off. What do I do?
Check the skin underneath first. Most dogs that fight a nappy are either uncomfortable from a poor fit or sore from scald. Fix the fit or treat the skin before you treat it as bad behaviour.
What is the best way to clean up dog urine indoors?
An enzymatic cleaner, which breaks the compounds down rather than covering them. Ordinary cleaners hide the smell from you but not from your dog, and a dog goes back to the place it can still smell. Never use anything with ammonia, because urine already smells of ammonia and you are effectively re-marking the spot.
Can you order nappies or pee pads you do not stock?
Yes. WhatsApp +91 90044 85093 with your dog's waist measurement, sex, and the pack size you want, or email bark@animeal.in. We will confirm availability, price and timing before you commit.
