Most people buy a cat food and water dispenser because it looks tidy, and a cat is the one animal it does not suit. Cats will usually not drink next to their food. Put the two together and you often get a cat that eats normally and quietly drinks too little, which matters far more in cats than in dogs. Why the Combined Bowl Is the Wrong Shape for a Cat
Cats prefer not to drink beside their food. International Cat Care's advice on encouraging cats to drink puts it plainly: keep the water away from the food bowl. A double diner or a combined food and water dispenser holds the two a few centimetres apart, which is the one arrangement a cat is least likely to use.
There is a second problem with the gravity type. The water sits in a sealed reservoir, comes out slowly, and by the afternoon it is warm, still and carrying bits of kibble dust. Cats are fussy about water in a way dogs are not. A cat that will not touch a full dispenser will happily drink from a glass on your bedside table, and that is not the cat being difficult, it is the cat telling you the water is stale.
What to do instead is simple and free. Keep the food bowl where it is. Put water somewhere else entirely, in more than one place.
Why Cat Hydration Matters More Than Dog Hydration
Cats come from desert-living ancestors and are built to take most of their water from what they catch. The thirst drive that goes with that is weak. A cat on dry food alone is often running slightly dry all the time and looks completely normal doing it.
Water intake is part of managing several of the most common problems cats get:

None of that is a reason to panic about a healthy cat. It is a reason to make drinking easy, because it costs nothing and the cats who need it most are the ones who will not tell you.
The Cheapest Fix Is Not a Dispenser. It Is Wet Food.
Dry food is roughly eight to ten percent water. Wet food is roughly seventy to eighty percent. Moving even part of the daily ration to wet food does more for a cat's water intake than any bowl, fountain or dispenser you can buy.
You can go further. Add a spoon or two of extra water into wet food and stir it through. Most cats accept it without noticing. That is the single most effective hydration trick there is and it costs nothing.

Setting Up Water the Way Cats Want It

Fill it to the brim. A full bowl means the cat can drink without pushing its face down into it
The free experiments worth trying: leave a tap dripping slowly, put a glass of water somewhere the cat already likes to sit, or drop a ping pong ball into a wide bowl so the surface moves. Any of these can double what a fussy cat drinks, and none of them cost anything.

Bowl Shape, and What Is Actually Known About Whisker Fatigue
You will read that a deep narrow bowl presses on a cat's whiskers and causes "whisker fatigue". We would rather tell you what the evidence really says. Whisker fatigue is not a recognised condition in veterinary textbooks and many vets doubt it exists. One published study on it found that bowl type made no measurable difference to how the cats ate, but that when the cats were given a free choice, more of them chose the wide shallow bowl.
So: not a syndrome, but a preference worth respecting. A wide shallow bowl costs the same as a deep one, cats pick it when offered, and it also means the cat can drink with its head up and its eyes on the room, which matters more to a cat than we tend to think. Buy the wide shallow one. Just do not let anyone sell it to you as a medical device.
Water Fountains: Who They Suit and Who They Do Not
Plenty of cats drink more from moving water, and a fountain is a reasonable buy for a cat that ignores a still bowl. Being straight with you: we do not currently stock one. If you are shopping for one anywhere, this is what to look at.

Is a cat food and water dispenser a good idea?
For food, a gravity dispenser is workable if your cat is not greedy. For water, it is the weakest option, because cats prefer to drink away from their food and the water in a sealed reservoir goes warm and stale. Keep the food where it is and give water its own place, in more than one spot.
How much water does a cat need a day?
Roughly 50ml per kilogram of body weight over 24 hours, from food and drink together. A cat on wet food gets most of it from the food and may barely drink at all, which is normal. A cat on dry food alone has to drink all of it, which is why the setup matters.

Move the bowl away from the food, add a second and third bowl elsewhere in the house, use a wide shallow bowl, fill it to the brim, and change the water daily. If that fails, try a dripping tap or a glass of water where the cat likes to sit. Most cats respond to one of these.
Are water fountains better than bowls for cats?
