Cat Food for Persian Cats, Kittens and Everything Else

Two things decide what to feed a cat: its life stage, and whether it has a health problem. Breed comes third, and for most cats it does not come into it at all. Persians are the exception where it genuinely does, because a flat face changes how a cat picks up food and a long coat changes what it swallows while grooming. This page covers what a Persian actually needs, what the word premium really means on a bag, and the handful of nutrients a cat must have that a dog does not.

What Cat Food for a Persian Cat Actually Changes

Breed formulas get dismissed as marketing, and for most breeds that is fair. For a Persian it is not, because a Persian is physically different in two ways that both affect eating.

So is it worth it? The kibble shape is the part we would not give up. If your Persian struggles to pick food up, or drops it, or eats slowly and messily, a breed kibble genuinely fixes that. The rest is useful but a good adult cat food from a brand you trust also delivers most of it.

Persian Kitten Food

A Persian kitten needs a kitten food until about twelve months, like any cat. What changes is the kibble again, because a kitten with a flat face is learning to eat with a mouth that does not work like other cats' mouths, and a kitten that cannot pick food up eats less than it should at the age when that matters most.

• Kitten food, not adult food, until twelve months. Kittens need far more protein, fat and calories per kilo than adults
• Small frequent meals. Four a day until four months, then three, then two
• Start combing on day one. A Persian that accepts a comb as a kitten is a Persian that never gets pelted. See Grooming for Cats
• Never cow's milk. Kittens are lactose intolerant and it causes diarrhoea, which a small kitten cannot afford
• Never human infant formula. If an orphaned kitten needs milk it needs a kitten milk replacer made for cats, for reasons in the next section

The Nutrients a Cat Must Have and a Dog Does Not

A cat is an obligate carnivore. That is not a lifestyle description, it is a metabolic fact with consequences, and it is why you cannot feed a cat what you feed a dog, a person or a vegetarian.

• Taurine. An essential amino acid for cats, found in animal tissue and absent from plants. Taurine deficiency causes dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle, and central retinal degeneration, which means permanent loss of sight. Neither reverses once it has gone far enough
• Vitamin A, preformed. Dogs and people turn beta-carotene from vegetables into vitamin A. Cats lack the enzyme to do it, so they need vitamin A ready-made from animal sources
• Arachidonic acid. A fatty acid found in animal fat. Dogs make their own from vegetable oils. Cats cannot
• More protein, arginine, niacin and vitamin B6 than a dog needs, pound for pound

What follows from that:

• Never feed a cat dog food as its main diet. A stolen mouthful is fine. Weeks of it is not, and a dog food does not carry enough taurine for a cat
• Never feed a cat a vegetarian or vegan diet. It cannot be done safely
• Never feed a kitten human infant formula. Human babies make their own taurine and human formula is not built to supply a kitten's. Use a kitten milk replacer
• A complete commercial cat food already contains all of this. That is what "complete" means and it is why home-cooked cat food is far harder to get right than home-cooked dog food

What "Super Premium" Actually Means

Nothing, legally. There is no regulation anywhere that defines premium or super premium pet food. Any manufacturer can print either phrase on any bag at any price. It tells you which shelf the product is aiming at, not what is inside it.

Here is what actually separates a good cat food from a poor one. Four things, all of which you can check on the pack in the shop.

1. A named animal protein at the top of the ingredient list. "Chicken" or "dehydrated chicken" rather than "meat and animal derivatives". You want to know which animal
2. A complete and balanced statement, naming the life stage it is complete for. A food that is only a complementary feed is a topper, not a meal
3. Feeding trials or at least a clear nutritional standard the food is formulated to
4. A batch code and a date, and a company that will answer the phone about them

What does not tell you anything: the words premium, super premium, gourmet, natural or holistic. A picture of a wild cat. A grain-free claim, which is a formulation choice rather than a quality marker. And price alone, because you can pay a great deal for a mediocre food.

Our honest position: a mid-price complete food fed consistently beats a super premium food you switch away from whenever money is tight. Consistency matters more than the tier.

Dry, Wet or Both

• Dry food is cheaper per meal, keeps once opened and is easy to measure. It is the main meal for most cats in India
• Wet food is around seventy to eighty percent water. For a cat this matters more than it does for a dog, because cats have a weak thirst drive and chronic kidney disease and bladder problems are extremely common. Wet food is the easiest way to get water into a cat
• Both together is what most cats do best on. Dry down for grazing, wet at meal times. Count both towards the daily total

The Persian Health Facts Worth Knowing Before You Buy Anything

We would rather tell you this than sell you a bag without it.

• Polycystic kidney disease is an inherited condition seen mainly in Persians, and also in Himalayans and British Shorthairs. Cysts are present from birth but signs usually appear around middle age. There is a genetic test, and ultrasound is how it is confirmed. If you are buying a Persian kitten, ask the breeder about PKD testing. If you already have one, it is worth knowing that a renal diet may be part of its future. Those are in Veterinary Diets
• The flat face is a breathing and eye issue as well as an eating one. Persians tear constantly because the tear ducts are squashed, and the eyes sit shallow and are prone to ulcers
• Dental crowding. A normal number of teeth in a shorter jaw means teeth grow at angles and trap food
• Grooming is not optional. A Persian needs combing every day. Two missed weeks is how a Persian ends up pelted and clipped under sedation

How Much to Feed, and Why Indoor Cats Get Fat

• Feed to the chart on the pack as a starting point, then to the cat's shape. You should feel the ribs easily and see a waist from above
• Weigh the food. A cat's daily ration is small enough that a heaped scoop instead of a level one is a real difference
• Count the treats. Under ten percent of the day's calories
• Indoor cats need less than the chart says. The numbers on a bag assume an average cat, and an indoor cat that sleeps eighteen hours a day is not it
• Feed cats separately in a multi-cat house. One cat eating two rations while another eats none is the most common cause of a fat cat and a thin cat under the same roof

When to Talk to a Vet Rather Than Change the Food

• A cat that has stopped eating for 24 hours. Urgent. A cat that stops eating can develop liver problems within days
• Sudden weight loss, or a jump in drinking, on unchanged food. In an older cat this points at kidneys, thyroid or diabetes
• Repeated vomiting, including bringing up hairballs more than occasionally. Frequent hairball vomiting is not normal and often is not hairballs
• Straining in the litter tray and passing little, especially a male cat. This is a blocked bladder and it is fatal within a day or two
• Ongoing itching, ear infections or loose stools you are trying to fix by changing food. Get a diagnosis before the fifth bag
• A Persian with a permanently wet face, a held-shut eye, or noisy breathing. All three are worth a look
