Cat Perfume: Read the Label Before You Spray Anything on a Cat
Cat perfume is a real category and people buy it for reasonable reasons. A cat that has got into something. An elderly cat that cannot groom its back end any more. A cat that came back from boarding smelling of somewhere else. Wanting your home to smell nice is not a crime.
But a cat is not a small dog with a different shape, and this is the one grooming category where that difference genuinely matters. So before the product list, here is what a veterinary pharmacy would tell you at the counter.
Why a Cat's Body Handles Scent Differently
Two facts change the whole question.
First, cats process certain compounds poorly. The Merck Veterinary Manual states that cats "are deficient in the enzyme glucuronyl transferase" and are therefore "very sensitive to phenol and phenolic compounds, which some oils contain." Phenolic compounds turn up in a lot of things that smell strong.
Second, a cat eats whatever you put on it. Merck notes that a cat's "natural grooming behavior places them at additional risk." Anything you spray on the coat is licked off within the hour. On a cat there is no such thing as a purely topical product.
Put those together and a scented spray on a cat is not the same act as a scented spray on a dog.
The Word "Natural" Is Not a Safety Claim
This is the part most people have backwards. In cat products, "natural" is often where the risk sits, because essential oils are natural.
Oils that VCA names as toxic to cats: "oil of cinnamon, citrus, pennyroyal, peppermint, pine, sweet birch, tea tree (melaleuca), wintergreen, and ylang ylang."
Merck adds that tea tree, birch tar, cassia bark, cinnamon oil and pennyroyal can be toxic to the liver, and that birch, cedar, eucalyptus, hyssop, pennyroyal, sage, wintergreen and wormwood are associated with seizures.
None of that means every scented product is dangerous. It means the ingredient list is the only thing that answers the question, and "natural fragrance" on the front of a bottle answers nothing.
The Sign That Should Stop You
Worth knowing, because it is uncomfortable and useful. VCA's list of the clinical signs of essential oil poisoning in a cat opens with:
"Fragrance or scent on hair coat, skin, or breath"
The rest of the list: "difficulty breathing", "difficulty walking or uncoordinated gait", "drooling", "lethargy or weakness", "muscle tremors", "pawing at the mouth or face", "redness or burns on the lips, gums, tongue, or skin", and vomiting where "you may note the smell of essential oils in the vomit".
If your cat shows any of those after contact with a scented product, wash it off with mild soap and warm water and phone a vet. Do not wait to see whether it settles.
What to Check Before You Buy Any Cat Cologne
A short list you can use on any bottle, ours included.

Is there an ingredient list at all? If there is not, that is your answer. Ask the seller. If they cannot tell you, do not buy it

Does it name any oil on the lists above? Tea tree and citrus are the two you will meet most often

Is it labelled for cats specifically, or for "pets"? A great deal of pet grooming product is formulated for dogs and labelled for both

Does it contain alcohol? It stings broken skin and a cat will taste it

Is it a light freshening product or a long-lasting fragrance? On a cat, less is genuinely better
If you do use a cat cologne, use very little, keep it off the face and away from the mouth, spray onto your hands and stroke it through the coat rather than spraying the cat directly, and stop using it if the cat over-grooms afterwards.
Cat Air Freshener and Cat Friendly Air Freshener
Freshening the room is a better idea than freshening the cat, and it is a different product.
The honest position on a cat friendly air freshener is that the phrase is used loosely and almost no household product is tested on cats. What we would say:

Ventilation beats fragrance. An open window does more than any spray and costs nothing

Avoid oil diffusers and liquid potpourri in a room a cat uses. Merck lists inhalation signs including "lacrimation, watery nasal discharge, nausea, drooling, vomiting, dyspnea, tachypnea, coughing, or wheezing". Liquid potpourri is also a contact hazard if a cat gets into the bowl

If you use any spray, use it in a room the cat is not in, and let it settle before the cat comes back

Never spray an air freshener near or into a litter tray. The next section explains why

Household air fresheners are not cat products. They are made for human noses in human rooms and nobody has asked what they do to an animal that lives at floor level and grooms itself
Cat Box Air Freshener: The Honest Answer
This is the search that brings most people here and the answer is not the one they want.
A cat box air freshener treats the symptom and can create a much worse problem. International Cat Care puts it plainly:
"Using scented litter, deodorants or disinfectants with strong smells may put your scent-sensitive cat off using the tray."
A cat that will not use its tray does not stop going to the toilet. It goes somewhere else in your house. Masking litter tray smell is one of the common routes into an indoor soiling problem, and an indoor soiling problem is far harder to fix than a smell.
What actually works, and it is all free:

One tray per cat, plus one extra. International Cat Care's guidance is "one litter tray per cat, plus at least one extra". Two cats means three trays. This single change fixes more smell problems than any product

Scoop at least twice a day. The guidance is to remove solids and clumps "at least twice daily" and top up with fresh litter

Full clean on a schedule. Completely empty and wash the tray weekly with non-clumping litter, or every two to four weeks with clumping litter

Use unscented litter. A fine sand-like litter is closest to what cats instinctively prefer

Wash with hot water and a mild detergent. Avoid heavily scented detergent

Never use a phenolic disinfectant near the tray. International Cat Care warns to "avoid disinfectants that turn cloudy in water as these usually contain phenols which are toxic to cats". Chloroxylenol, the active in Dettol, is one of these

Move the tray out of a corridor or a corner with one exit. Cats will not use a tray they feel trapped in, and an unused tray is not the smell source. The floor behind the sofa is
If you have done all seven and the smell is still bad, that is a signal rather than a nuisance. Read the next section.
A Cat Deodorizer Spray Is Not the Answer to a Cat That Has Started to Smell
Healthy cats do not smell. That is close to the whole point of a cat. So a cat that has newly started to smell is telling you something, and a cat deodorizer spray covers the message without changing it.
See a vet rather than reaching for a spray if you notice:

Bad breath. Very often dental disease, which is painful and extremely common in cats

A smell from the skin or coat, often a yeast or bacterial infection

A strong smell from the rear end, which can be anal gland trouble, diarrhoea, or a cat that has stopped being able to clean itself

Stronger smelling urine, or a cat straining in the tray. In a male cat, straining with little or no urine is an emergency. Go now, not tomorrow

A cat that has simply stopped grooming. Cats groom constantly. One that stops is usually in pain, arthritic, overweight beyond reach, or unwell

Why Your Cat May Attack Its Housemate After a Change of Smell
Worth knowing if you have more than one cat, because it catches people out and it looks like the cats have simply turned on each other.
It is called non-recognition aggression. One cat comes back from the vet, or from grooming, smelling different, and the other cat treats it as a stranger. The returning cat "is unrecognizable and/or perceived as a threat because he or she smells alien", and the smell "of alcohol or disinfectant on the returning cat" can also trigger a bad association.
Cats identify each other largely by scent. So changing how one of your cats smells is not a cosmetic act in a multi-cat home. If it happens, separate them and reintroduce gradually "through a screen, gate, or cracked door" rather than forcing them together, and give it days rather than minutes.
This is a solid reason to be conservative with perfume for a cat that lives with other cats.

Is scented cat litter a good idea?
Generally not. Cats find strong scents overpowering and may stop using the tray. Unscented is the safer default.
