Dog Food for Golden Retrievers, Labradors and Every Other Dog

Choosing dog food is mostly two decisions. What life stage is your dog in, and how big will it get. Get those two right and the rest is detail. Get them wrong and a large breed puppy grows too fast, or an adult dog puts on weight it will carry into old age. This page covers large breed feeding, puppy and weaning food, grain free, how much to feed, and how to switch without upsetting the stomach.

Start Here: Five Sections, Five Different Jobs

Section What it is for
Dry Food Everyday kibble. The main meal for most dogs
Premium Food Royal Canin, N&D, Arden Grange, Dibaq. Breed and size specific formulas
Veterinary Diets Kidney, liver, gut, urinary, weight. Fed on a vet's instruction
Wet Food Cans, pouches and gravy. Toppers, fussy eaters, extra water
Infant Food Milk replacer and weaning food for puppies under eight weeks

The Most Important Thing on This Page, If You Have a Large Breed Puppy

A golden retriever puppy, a labrador puppy or any dog that will finish over about 25 kg must be fed a large breed puppy food, not an ordinary puppy food.

This is not marketing. Large breed puppy formulas have controlled calcium and controlled energy on purpose. A big puppy that grows too fast, or that takes in too much calcium while the skeleton is forming, is at higher risk of developmental joint problems including hip and elbow trouble. The bones are laying down over roughly twelve to eighteen months and the damage done in that window does not undo itself.

Three rules that matter more than the brand you pick:

  • Feed a large breed puppy formula until the dog is twelve to eighteen months old. Small breed puppy food is the wrong calcium profile for a big dog
  • Do not add calcium supplements to a complete puppy food. A complete food already has the right amount. Adding more is a common and genuinely harmful mistake
  • Keep the puppy lean. A fat puppy is not a healthy puppy. You should be able to feel the ribs easily under a thin layer. Rapid growth is a risk factor in itself, so feed to the chart and adjust down if the puppy is getting round

Slower is better with a big puppy. The dog reaches the same adult size either way. Growing there slowly is what protects the joints.

Large Breed Adult Food, and What "Maxi" Means

The best large breed dog food for my golden retriever is a question we get in the shop most weeks, and the honest answer starts with what large breed food actually changes.

  • Kibble size. Bigger pieces slow a fast eater down and encourage chewing rather than swallowing whole
  • Joint support. Most large breed adult formulas carry added glucosamine and chondroitin. Useful in a big dog carrying 30 kg on the same joints for a decade
  • Calorie density. Slightly lower, because a big dog that gains weight has more to carry

On our shelves, Royal Canin calls this range Maxi and it is for adult dogs from about 26 kg to 44 kg. Giant is above that. Arden Grange, N&D and Pedigree Pro all run their own large breed lines. Browse them in Premium Food.

One warning about our own labels. The letters on our bags, (S), (M), (L), (XL) and so on, describe the size of the bag, not the size of the dog. A bag marked (L) is a 3kg pack. Read the weight in the brackets, not the letter.

Breed Formulas: Worth It, or Marketing?

Partly both, and we would rather be straight about which part is which.

A breed formula is a size and shape formula with breed-specific tweaks on top. Dog food for golden retrievers uses a kibble shaped for a broad muzzle and a dog that gulps, plus fatty acids aimed at a long coat, plus joint support, plus a calorie level set for a breed that gains weight easily. None of that is invented. Whether it is worth the extra over a good Maxi formula is a fair question, and for many owners the answer is no.

What we would say: a good large breed food from a brand you trust beats a breed formula you cannot afford to keep buying. Consistency matters more than the label. If you can afford the breed line and your dog does well on it, there is nothing wrong with it either.

We stock the Royal Canin breed range for Golden Retriever, Labrador, German Shepherd, Beagle, Cocker, Pug, Shih Tzu and Rottweiler. Search "golden ret" or "labrador" on the site, because some of these are listed with shortened names. All of it sits in Royal Canin.

Dog Food for a Labrador Puppy

A labrador puppy needs the same large breed puppy rules as a golden retriever, with one extra problem: labradors are the breed most likely to behave as though they are starving. There is a known genetic quirk in the breed affecting appetite regulation, which is a polite way of saying your labrador is not lying about being hungry and is also not right.

  • Weigh the food. A cup is not a measurement. Kitchen scales cost less than one bag of food
  • Feed three meals a day until four months, then two. Do not free feed a labrador
  • Use part of the daily ration as training treats rather than adding treats on top
  • Recheck the amount every two weeks while the puppy is growing

Weaning: The Best Puppy Food for Weaning Puppies

Weaning usually starts at three to four weeks and is finished by six to eight weeks. It should be gradual, and the mother should still be feeding during it wherever possible.

  1. Week three to four. Offer a thin gruel. Soak a puppy starter kibble in warm water or in puppy milk replacer until it is soft, then mash it
  2. Week four to six. Thicken it. Less liquid, more solid, four small meals a day
  3. Week six to eight. Softened puppy kibble, then dry. Fresh water available from the moment solids start

The one thing you must not do: do not feed cow's milk, and do not feed human infant formula. Human baby formula, whatever the brand, is built for a human infant. The protein level, the fat level and the calcium to phosphorus ratio are all wrong for a puppy, and the lactose gives most puppies diarrhoea. A three week old puppy with diarrhoea can dehydrate within a day. If a puppy needs milk, it needs a puppy milk replacer made for dogs. Everything in Infant Food that is labelled for dogs and cats is the right category. If you are unsure which product in front of you is which, call us and we will tell you.

An orphaned litter under three weeks is a vet job, not a shopping job. Bottle feeding a newborn puppy has a technique, a schedule and a real risk of milk going into the lungs. Ring us or ring a vet before you start.

"Dog Food Zero": Grain Zero, Zero Grain and Grain Free

Grain zero, zero grain and grain free all mean the same thing. No wheat, no corn, no rice. Something else is used instead, usually potato, sweet potato, pumpkin, peas, lentils or chickpeas. On our shelves the grain free range is mostly the N&D GF line, where GF is short for grain free.

Who actually needs it: a dog with a diagnosed grain intolerance, which is uncommon. Most food reactions in dogs are to a protein, usually chicken or dairy, not to grain. If your dog is itching, a grain free food is not automatically the answer and a hypoallergenic diet may be. That belongs in Veterinary Diets and in a conversation with your vet.

What you should know before you buy it anyway. Since 2018 there has been an investigation into a link between certain diets and dilated cardiomyopathy, a serious heart muscle disease. The current position after more than thirty published studies is that the problem tracks with diets high in pulses, meaning peas, lentils, chickpeas and beans, rather than with the absence of grain as such. Grain inclusive foods loaded with pulses appear to carry it too. The mechanism is still not identified. Dogs affected can improve when the diet is changed, particularly if it is caught early.

What we would do with that: not panic, and read the ingredient list. If peas, lentils or chickpeas are stacked near the top of the list, ask your vet whether that food suits your dog, especially with a large breed. If your dog is on a food that suits it and is thriving, that is information too.

How Much to Feed, and Why Golden Retrievers Get Fat

Every bag has a feeding chart. Treat it as a starting point, not an instruction. It is written for an average dog of that weight and your dog is not average.

  • Feed to the dog's body condition, not to the chart. Ribs easy to feel, waist visible from above, tummy tucked up from the side. If you cannot feel ribs, reduce by ten percent and check again in a month
  • Weigh, do not scoop. The gap between a level cup and a heaped cup is a lot of calories across a year
  • Count the treats. Treats should stay under ten percent of the day's food. Most people are well over
  • Golden retrievers and labradors both gain weight easily. Being overweight shortens a dog's life and makes hip and elbow problems worse. It is the most common preventable health problem we see across the counter

On bloat. Deep chested large breeds including golden retrievers are at higher risk of gastric dilatation and volvulus, where the stomach twists. It is a genuine emergency. Splitting the day's food into two or three meals rather than one large one is sensible, and studies have linked raised bowls with higher risk in large and giant breeds, so a floor level bowl is the safer default unless your vet has told you otherwise.

Wet, Dry or Both

  • Dry food is cheaper per meal, keeps once opened, and is easier to measure. It is the main meal for most dogs
  • Wet food is around seventy to eighty percent water, which suits a dog that drinks little, an older dog, a dog with dental problems and a fussy eater
  • Both together is fine and very common. Use wet as a topper over kibble. Just count both towards the day's total, because this is the easiest way in the world to overfeed a dog by accident

Our full range is in Wet Food.

Switching Food Without Upsetting the Stomach

Change food over seven days. A sudden switch is the most common cause of the diarrhoea people then blame on the new food.

  1. Days 1 and 2. One quarter new food, three quarters old
  2. Days 3 and 4. Half and half
  3. Days 5 and 6. Three quarters new, one quarter old
  4. Day 7. All new food
  5. If the stools go loose, go back a step for two days and move more slowly. A sensitive dog may need fourteen days

Exception: if a vet has told you to switch immediately for a medical reason, follow the vet.

What Dog Food Costs Here

Prices shown are what you pay on the site today.

Type Roughly
Everyday dry food, 1kg to 1.5kg ₹224 to ₹351
Everyday dry food, 3kg ₹449 to ₹765
Everyday dry food, 10kg to 20kg ₹1,935 to ₹3,690
Premium and breed formulas, 3kg to 4kg ₹2,050 to ₹4,095
Premium and breed formulas, 10kg to 15kg ₹6,291 to ₹11,925
Wet food, per can or pouch ₹35 to ₹720
Puppy milk and weaning powders ₹269 to ₹1,485

Check the price per kilo, not the price on the bag. A bigger sack is usually cheaper per kilo, but not always. Divide the price by the weight before you buy, and do it for the brand you actually want rather than assuming. It takes ten seconds and on a 20kg sack it can be worth several hundred rupees.

A worked example. Royal Canin Maxi Adult runs ₹945 per kg in the 1kg pack, ₹812 per kg at 4kg and ₹706 per kg at 10kg, so the big bag is clearly worth it. Royal Canin Golden Retriever Adult runs ₹930 per kg at 3kg and ₹902 per kg at 12kg, which is a much smaller gap. If you are not sure the dog will eat it, buy the small bag first. The saving on the big one is only three percent and a rejected 12kg sack is a real loss.

  • Email bark@animeal.in
  • Call any branch. Parel is on +91 90041 57093, 24 hours

We will confirm availability, price and how long it will take before you commit to anything. If we cannot get it, we will say so and suggest the closest equivalent rather than sell you something that does not match.

When to Stop and Call a Vet

  • A puppy under eight weeks that will not eat, or that has diarrhoea. Small puppies go downhill fast
  • Repeated vomiting, or diarrhoea lasting more than a day or two in any dog
  • A swollen, hard belly with retching that brings nothing up, especially in a big deep chested dog. This is a suspected bloat and it is an emergency. Do not wait until morning
  • Sudden weight loss, or sudden weight gain, on unchanged food
  • Ongoing itching, ear infections or loose stools that you are trying to fix by changing food. Get a diagnosis before you buy a fifth bag
  • A dog that has eaten something it should not have, including chocolate, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic or anything with xylitol. Call immediately, do not wait for symptoms

Our Parel branch is open 24 hours and there is always someone on the phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best dog food for golden retrievers?

A large breed formula matched to the life stage. A golden retriever puppy needs a large breed puppy food with controlled calcium until twelve to eighteen months, then a large breed adult food. Royal Canin makes a Golden Retriever specific line and we stock both the puppy and adult versions, but a good large breed food from any brand you trust and can keep buying will do the job.

What is the best large breed dog food for my golden retriever if I am on a budget?

Pedigree Pro Adult Large Breed and Drools large breed lines are the affordable end and they are complete foods. Consistency matters more than price. A mid-price food fed correctly beats a premium food you switch away from every time money is tight.

What is the right dog food for a labrador puppy?

A large breed puppy formula, weighed rather than scooped, three meals a day until about four months and two after that. Labradors are prone to overeating, so feed to body condition and keep the puppy lean. Do not add calcium to a complete puppy food.

What is the best puppy food for weaning puppies?

A puppy starter kibble soaked in warm water or in a puppy milk replacer, mashed to a gruel from three to four weeks and thickened over the following weeks. Never use cow's milk or human infant formula. If a puppy needs milk, use a milk replacer made for dogs.

What does "dog food zero" mean?

People usually mean grain zero, which is the same as zero grain and grain free. No wheat, corn or rice. Most itchy dogs are reacting to a protein rather than to grain, so grain free is not automatically the answer, and diets high in peas, lentils and chickpeas have been linked to a heart condition that is still under investigation. Read the ingredient list and ask your vet.

When do I switch a puppy to adult food?

Around twelve months for a small or medium dog and twelve to eighteen months for a large breed such as a golden retriever or a labrador. Switching a big puppy to adult food too early cuts the nutrition it still needs while the skeleton is finishing.

Can I mix wet and dry food?

Yes, and many dogs do better on a mix. Count both towards the daily total. Adding a pouch on top of a full bowl of kibble is one of the easiest ways to make a dog overweight without noticing.

How long does an open bag of dog food last?

Keep it in the original bag, roll the top down, and put the whole bag inside an airtight bin rather than tipping the kibble in loose. The bag has a fat barrier and the printed batch code. Use a large sack within about six weeks of opening. In Mumbai humidity, less.

My dog will not eat the new food. What now?

Slow the changeover down and mix a little warm water or a spoon of wet food through the kibble. Do not leave a full bowl down all day, because a dog that grazes never gets hungry enough to try something new. If the dog is genuinely refusing food for more than a day, that is a vet call rather than a food problem.

Can you order a dog food you do not have in stock?

Yes. WhatsApp +91 90044 85093 or email bark@animeal.in with the brand, formula and pack size. We will confirm price and timing before you commit.
