Nearly every puppy in India is born with roundworm, passed on before it was even born. That is not a sign of a badly kept litter, it is simply how roundworm works. Tell Us the Breed Before You Buy Ivermectin

Some dogs carry a gene mutation called MDR1 that stops them clearing ivermectin out of the brain. In an affected dog the drug builds up where it should not, and the result is tremors, blindness, collapse and in severe cases death.

This matters in India more than most people realise. Around 10 percent of German Shepherds carry it, and about 5 percent of mixed breeds, which includes a great many Indies. In Collies it is around 70 percent.

The important detail, because the internet gets this wrong in both directions:

• At the low doses used for heartworm prevention, ivermectin is considered safe even in dogs with the mutation
• At the higher doses used to treat mange and mites, it is not. That is where the poisonings happen
• Milbemycin, selamectin and moxidectin are in the same drug family and the same caution applies

So tell us your dog's breed and what the product is for. If your dog is a German Shepherd, an Indie, a Collie or any herding type, say so before you buy an ivermectin tablet, and ask your vet whether a different drug suits better. A genetic test exists and is worth doing once for a dog that will need these medicines repeatedly.

Which Drug Kills Which Worm

Wormers are named by brand and sold by drug. The drug is what matters.

A dog dewormer for all worms means praziquantel plus pyrantel plus febantel, or fenbendazole given as a course. Anything with only one of those drugs has a gap. If you are specifically after the best dog medicine for tapeworms, praziquantel is the answer and nothing else on this page replaces it.

Which Worm Does Your Dog Have?

Tapeworm and fleas travel together. A dog gets tapeworm by swallowing an infected flea while chewing at an itch. Treat the tapeworm and not the fleas and it comes straight back, which is why so many people conclude the wormer failed. If you find rice-like segments, treat both. Puppy Deworming: The Schedule That Matters Most

Puppies need worming far more often than adults, and this is the part people get wrong. Roundworm crosses the placenta before birth and comes through the mother's milk after, so a puppy can be infected from day one.

Commonly recommended in India. Your vet's plan for your litter beats any table.

Why every two weeks and not once. A dose kills the worms in the gut on the day you give it. It does not kill eggs or the larvae still migrating through the tissues. Two weeks later that next batch has matured into the gut, and the next dose catches them. This is why a puppy that was wormed can still have worms, and it is the single most common reason people think a product did not work.

Use a puppy product for a puppy. The puppy syrups here are lower concentration and easier to measure for a body weight of one or two kilos. Splitting an adult tablet by eye is how puppies get overdosed.

Weigh the puppy every single time. A puppy can double its weight between doses, and every one of these products is dosed by weight.

Adult Dogs, and Sizing for Large Breeds

Adults need worming every three months as a baseline. More often if your dog scavenges, hunts, eats raw, goes to a boarding kennel, or lives with a young child.

Large dogs are where the cost bites, because dosing is by weight and a 40 kg Labrador needs several times what a Pug does. That is why XL packs exist. We stock Kiwof Plus XL for exactly this, and a large dog wormer bought as an XL pack works out cheaper per dose than buying four standard tablets.

Never round down on a large dog. Under-dosing does not half-kill the worms, it leaves them alive and gives the survivors a chance to become harder to treat. If your dog sits between two pack sizes, ask us rather than guessing.

For a small dog the opposite applies: a tablet meant for 10 kg given to a 3 kg Pomeranian is an overdose. Some tablets are scored to be split and some are not. Ask before you cut one.

If You Have a Dog and a Cat

A lot of people search for a dewormer for cats and dogs, hoping for one product that covers the whole house. Some active ingredients are shared, but the products are not interchangeable, because the concentration and the tablet size differ and a cat is far more sensitive to getting it wrong.

Buy the cat one for the cat and the dog one for the dog. What you should do together is the timing: deworming cats and dogs on the same day, and treating everyone for fleas in the same week, stops one pet reinfecting the other. Our cat wormers are here.

Syrup or Tablet?

Syrup for puppies and small dogs. The dose can be measured to the millilitre, which matters enormously at two kilos, and it is far easier to get into a wriggling puppy than a tablet.

Tablets for adults. Cheaper per dose, and most dogs take one hidden in food without noticing. Dog worming tablets are the normal choice for anything over about 10 kg. Puppy deworming pills exist too, but for a puppy under a few kilos the syrup measures far more accurately than a pill you have to split.

A course rather than a single dose applies to fenbendazole products, which are given daily for three to five days. Missing day three of a five day course is the same as not treating.

How to Give a Dog a Worming Tablet

1. Weigh the dog and read the dose on the box before you do anything else
2. Try food first. Most dogs take a tablet inside a piece of chicken, paneer or a pill masking treat. If it works, stop here
3. If not, sit the dog down with its back against something so it cannot reverse away from you
4. Lift the head so the nose points up and slide the tablet over the back of the tongue
5. Close the mouth and stroke the throat until you feel or see a swallow
6. Offer water or a treat immediately. This clears the tablet down and ends the session on a good note
7. Check the floor. Dogs are very good at holding a tablet in the cheek and dropping it under the sofa

If your dog vomits within an hour, the dose may not have worked. Ring us or your vet before giving a second one, because the answer depends on the product.

Over the Counter or Prescription?

Most dog wormers in India are over the counter, and everything in the praziquantel and pyrantel range on this page can be bought without a prescription from us. If you are looking for the best OTC dewormer for dogs, that is where to look.

For an average adult dog, worming four times a year costs a few hundred rupees. Treating a puppy that has become anaemic from hookworm costs a great deal more, and roundworm can pass to children. This is one of the cheapest pieces of preventive care you will ever buy.

When to See a Vet Instead

• Pale white or grey gums. Anaemia, and in a puppy with hookworm it can kill within days
• A puppy that is not growing, or has a swollen belly with the ribs showing
• Blood in the stool, or black tarry stool
• Vomiting repeatedly, or diarrhoea that continues after worming
• Worms still visible a week after a full dose. Either the weight was wrong, the drug missed that worm, or something else is going on
• Any tremor, wobbliness, dilated pupils or drooling after a dose. Bring the packet. If it was an ivermectin product, say so immediately
• A pregnant dog, a very young puppy, or a dog already unwell. Ask before you dose, not after

Frequently Asked Questions

Dewormer, wormer, worming medicine, deworming medication: same thing?

Yes. Dewormer, de-wormer, wormer, worming medicine, worm meds and deworming medication all mean the same thing, and a canine dewormer is simply one made for dogs. Deworming pills, worm tablets and worming tablets are the same object too. The only real difference between products is which drugs are inside, because that decides which worms die.

What is the best dewormer for puppies?

A puppy syrup containing pyrantel and febantel, given every two weeks from two weeks of age. Drontal Puppy, Kiwof Puppy, Eazypet Puppy and Cani-D all do this job. Syrup rather than tablets, because the dose can be measured properly for a small body weight.

What is the best dewormer for dogs overall?

Tapeworm. Your dog swallowed an infected flea while chewing at an itch. You need a product containing praziquantel, and you need to treat the fleas at the same time, or it returns within weeks.

Is ivermectin safe for my dog?

For most dogs at the right dose, yes. But some dogs carry the MDR1 mutation and cannot clear it from the brain, including around 10 percent of German Shepherds and 5 percent of mixed breeds. Low heartworm-prevention doses are considered safe even in these dogs. The higher doses used for mange are not. Tell us your dog's breed before buying an ivermectin product.

Can I use the same dewormer for my dog and my cat?

No. Some ingredients are shared but the concentrations and tablet sizes differ, and cats are much less forgiving of a dosing error. Buy the product made for each animal. Do treat them on the same day, and treat fleas at the same time, so they do not reinfect each other.
