Leash/Collars & Harnesses For Dogs
Dog Harnesses for Large Dogs, Small Dogs and Everything Between
Most people buy a harness because their dog pulls, and most people then buy the wrong one. A back-clip harness on a puller can make the pulling worse. A strap across the shoulder joint changes how a dog walks. A harness a dog can reverse out of is worse than no harness at all on a road. This page covers what actually matters: harness against collar, where the clip goes, how to fit one so it cannot come off, and which type suits your dog's size and shape.
Why a Harness, and When a Collar Is Genuinely Risky
A collar puts every bit of pulling force onto a narrow band around the throat, over the windpipe and the thyroid. For a dog that walks nicely on a loose lead, that is fine. For a dog that pulls, it is not.
Three dogs where a collar should not be used for walking at all:
- Flat-faced breeds. Pugs, Shih Tzus, Bulldogs, Boxers and Pekingese already have compromised airways. Pressure on the throat makes a bad situation worse
- Small breeds prone to a collapsing windpipe. Pomeranians, Yorkies, Chihuahuas, Maltese and Shih Tzus. Once a trachea starts collapsing it does not recover, and the honking cough is permanent
- Any dog that pulls hard, whatever the size. A 30 kg Labrador throwing itself against a collar is putting real force through its own neck
A harness spreads that force across the chest and shoulders, which is a far larger area and none of it is windpipe. That is the whole argument, and it is why a dog harness is the default recommendation for walking now.
Keep the collar anyway. A harness is for walking. A collar is where the ID tag lives, and a dog that slips a lead needs a name and a number on its neck. Use both, not one.
Front Clip, Back Clip or Both
This is the single most useful thing to understand, and almost nobody in a shop explains it.
| Where the ring is | What happens when the dog pulls | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Back clip, between the shoulder blades | The dog pulls straight ahead and gets nowhere. Dogs have an opposition reflex, so pressure on the chest makes many of them push harder | A dog that already walks nicely. Comfortable, easy to fit, no training benefit |
| Front clip, on the chest | Pulling turns the dog sideways, back towards you. It becomes self-correcting without any pressure on the neck | Any dog that pulls. This is the real dog training harness and the one most people should buy |
| Dual clip, rings front and back | Both, and you can use a double-ended lead on both at once | Most people, honestly. Train on the front, relax on the back once the dog is walking well |
If your dog pulls and you buy a back-clip harness, you have bought a very comfortable pulling aid. That is the most common mistake in this category.
Shape Matters as Much as the Clip
- Y-front is better than a straight strap. Look at the chest from the front. A Y-shaped harness sits in front of the shoulders and leaves the joint free. A single strap running horizontally across the shoulders sits on the joint and shortens the stride. On a growing puppy or a dog that walks a lot, that matters
- Overhead or step-in. An overhead harness goes over the head and buckles behind the front legs. A step-in harness the dog stands into and you clip on the back. Step-in suits a head-shy dog, a rescue, or a dog with neck or ear problems
- Vest or strap. A canine harness vest has a padded panel across the chest and spreads load best, which suits a strong puller. A strap dog harness is lighter and cooler, which matters in a Mumbai summer. A rope harness sits between the two
- Full body harness. A dog full body harness wraps further back along the ribs and adds a second belly strap. It is what people mean by a full body harness for dogs, and it is worth it for a dog that has escaped a normal harness before or for one that needs lifting. It is more fabric, so it is warmer, which is a real drawback in this climate
- Harness built into a coat. A dog coat with built in harness has a clip ring sewn through the fabric. It saves layering two things in cold weather, but check the ring is stitched to a load-bearing strap underneath and not just to the coat
- Padding and sensitive skin. A dog harness for sensitive skin should have soft-edged webbing, no exposed stitching under the armpit and no metal touching skin. The armpit is where rubbing always starts
- Reflective stitching is worth having in any Indian city, where a lot of walking happens after dark. Reflective dog collars and leashes do the same job for the rest of the setup

Sizing: Measure, Do Not Guess
Buy on the chest measurement, not on the dog harness weight chart. Weight is a rough guide and dogs of the same weight can be two sizes apart in shape. A 12 kg Beagle and a 12 kg Whippet are not the same animal.
- Measure the girth with a soft tape right behind the front legs, around the deepest part of the chest
- Measure the neck low down where a harness sits, not high up where a collar sits
- Buy to the measurement. If your dog falls between two sizes, take the larger and tighten the straps
- Two fingers flat should slide under any strap. Tighter rubs, looser lets the dog out
- The escape test. With the harness on, pull the lead gently backwards and downwards while the dog steps back. If the harness slides towards the head at all, it is too loose or the wrong shape. A dog that reverses out of a harness on a road is the accident this test prevents
Recheck a growing puppy every two weeks. A puppy dog harness that fitted at four months will not fit at six, and a harness that has become tight causes rubbing under the front legs long before you notice it.
Which Harness for Which Dog
Large and strong dogs
For a Labrador Retriever, a German Shepherd, a Rottweiler or a big Indie, look for a wide padded chest panel, metal hardware rather than plastic buckles at the load points, and a handle on the back. The handle is the underrated feature: it lets you hold the dog at a road crossing or lift it into a car without grabbing the collar. Dog harnesses for large dogs are also where a front clip earns its money, because at 30 kg you are not going to out-pull the dog.
Harnesses for working dogs and hunting dogs are a separate build. A working harness or a dog hunting harness is made for a dog that is out for hours, so it uses heavier webbing, wider padding and often a chest plate for patch panels. If your dog is doing tracking, field work or long trail days rather than a street walk, tell us and we will source that type rather than sell you a city harness.
Medium dogs
Beagles, Basset Hounds, Cockers and mid-size Indies. A medium sized dog harness is the widest-selling size and the one where measuring matters most, because the range covers dogs of very different shapes. A Basset Hound harness is a shape problem more than a size one, because a deep chest on short legs means girth and neck measurements that do not match any standard size chart. Measure both and buy adjustable. The same applies to a Beagle harness, where dogs of identical weight vary a lot in chest depth.
Small dogs and toy breeds
A Shih Tzu harness, a Maltese dog harness or one for a Pomeranian should be light, soft and Y-shaped. For flat-faced and small breeds a harness is not a preference, it is the safe option, for the airway reasons above. Look for the lightest thing that fits properly, because a heavy padded harness on a 4 kg dog is a burden rather than a help.
The best dog harness for a Boston Terrier, a Pug or a French Bulldog is whichever soft Y-front one fits. A Boston Terrier is short-muzzled and barrel-chested at the same time, so the neck opening is usually the part that has to be adjusted, not the girth. Any flat-faced terrier or bulldog type should never be walked on a collar.
Puppies
A puppy body harness should be soft, fully adjustable and cheap enough that outgrowing it does not hurt. Expect to buy two before the dog is fully grown. Do not spend heavily on the first one. Harnesses for puppies also do a second job: they are how a puppy learns that a lead means going somewhere good, so let the puppy wear it around the house before you ever clip a lead on.
Older dogs and dogs with weak back legs
A dog harness for back legs, sometimes called a lifting harness, has a rear sling or handles that let you take weight off the hindquarters. It helps an arthritic dog up stairs, into a car, or off a slippery floor. Dog lifting harnesses for large dogs are the ones most often needed, because that is where the owner cannot simply pick the dog up. If your dog is struggling on its back end, that also belongs in a conversation about joint support rather than being solved by equipment alone.
Car Safety Is a Different Product
A walking harness is not a car harness and the two should not be swapped. A vehicle safety harness for dogs is built to take crash forces and attaches to the seatbelt buckle or anchor point. A walking harness clipped to a seatbelt will not hold in an impact and can injure the dog by concentrating force in the wrong place.
An unrestrained dog in a car is a danger to itself and to everyone in the vehicle. At city speeds a 25 kg dog thrown forward carries enormous force. It is also the reason a lot of dogs are lost after minor accidents, because a frightened dog leaves through an open door.
A safety belt harness for dogs, a crate strapped in, or a boot barrier all work. A dog loose on a lap does not, and neither does a lead tied to a headrest.
Head Halters, Choke Chains and What We Do Not Recommend
Dog halters, also called head halters or head collars, work like a headcollar on a horse. The lead attaches under the chin and where the head goes the body follows. They give a small handler real control of a very large dog. They also need proper introduction, because most dogs hate them at first and will paw at the nose. Used badly, a sharp pull on a head halter can twist the neck. Ask us before you buy one and we will show you how to introduce it.
On choke chains, slip chains and prong collars, we will be straight with you. They work by causing discomfort. They are linked to injury of the windpipe and the tissue around it, and the evidence on aversive equipment points to more behaviour problems rather than fewer. A front-clip harness achieves the same result, which is a dog that stops pulling, without any of it.
Retractable leads are popular and we would rather you knew the trade-off. They give you almost no control at distance, the thin cord causes friction burns on hands and legs, and the plastic handle dropped by a startled owner clatters along behind the dog and terrifies it into running. A fixed lead of one and a half to two metres is better for almost everything.

An affordable dog harness is a real thing and a cheap dog harness is usually not. The difference shows up at the buckle and the stitching, which are the two things that fail, and they fail while a dog is attached to a road. Spend on hardware and stitching rather than on printing. A printed dog harness in a nice colour is a perfectly good buy if the buckles are solid, and a bad buy if they are not.
On looks: people search for a cute dog harness, a boy dog harness or a girl dog harness and what they mean is colour and pattern, not a different build. Nothing about the safety of a harness changes with the colour. Pick the shape and the clip first, then pick the one you like the look of. A collar and harness set or a harness and leash set in matching colours is fine to buy as a set, as long as you have checked the fit of the harness on its own.
Looking for a Harness We Do Not Stock?
Ask us and we will arrange it. Being straight with you: most of this range is sold out right now, including the walking harnesses. We would rather tell you here than let you find out at checkout. If you want a front-clip harness, a car safety harness, a lifting harness or a specific size, tell us and we will source it.
Truelove, which many people type as true love, is the brand asked for most often here. A true love dog harness is a padded front-and-back clip design and we can order it in. Harness accessories such as a spare chest strap, a double-ended lead, a seatbelt tether or a replacement buckle can be sourced the same way. When to Stop and Check Something
- Bald patches or raw skin under the front legs. The harness is too tight or the wrong shape. Stop using it until the skin heals
- A shortened stride or a change in gait. Often a strap sitting across the shoulder joint
- A honking, goose-like cough in a small dog. That is a windpipe sign and it needs a vet, not a different collar
- Coughing or retching after a walk in a dog walked on a collar
- Any escape. If your dog has backed out of a harness once, it will do it again. Refit it or replace it before the next walk
- Sudden reluctance to have the harness put on. Dogs do not become difficult for no reason. Check the fit and check the skin underneath
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a harness better than a collar for a dog?
For walking, yes for most dogs, because a harness spreads the pulling force across the chest instead of the windpipe. It matters most for flat-faced breeds, small breeds prone to a collapsing trachea, and any dog that pulls. Keep a collar as well for the ID tag.
What is the best dog harness for large dogs?
One with a wide padded chest panel, metal hardware at the load points, a handle on the back, and a front clip if your dog pulls. Buy on the chest girth measurement rather than the weight chart, and do the escape test before the first walk.
Front clip or back clip?
Front clip if your dog pulls, because pulling turns the dog back towards you and the harness corrects itself. Back clip only if your dog already walks nicely, since pressure on the chest makes many dogs push harder. A dual-clip harness gives you both.
What size dog harness do I need?
Measure the chest girth right behind the front legs and the neck low down where the harness sits, then buy to those numbers. If your dog is between two sizes, take the larger. You should be able to slide two fingers flat under any strap.
What harness suits a Shih Tzu or other small breed?
Light, soft and Y-shaped, with a front or dual clip. For flat-faced breeds a harness is the safe option rather than a preference, because pressure on the throat worsens an already compromised airway. Avoid heavy padded harnesses on a very small dog.
Can I use a walking harness in the car?
No. A car harness is built to take crash forces and attaches to a seatbelt anchor. A walking harness clipped to a seatbelt will not hold in an impact and can concentrate force in the wrong place. Use a vehicle safety harness, a strapped-in crate or a boot barrier.
Are choke chains or prong collars a good way to stop pulling?
No, and we would rather say so. They work by causing discomfort, they are linked to windpipe and neck injury, and aversive equipment is associated with more behaviour problems rather than fewer. A front-clip harness gets the same result without any of that.
How do I stop my dog backing out of its harness?
Refit it. Two fingers flat under every strap, then pull the lead gently backwards and downwards while the dog steps back. If the harness slides towards the head, it is too loose or the wrong shape. A dog that has escaped once will try again.
My dog has weak back legs. Is there a harness for that?
Yes. A lifting or mobility harness has a rear sling or handles so you can take weight off the hindquarters going up stairs or into a car. It is worth discussing joint support with your vet at the same time, because equipment manages the problem rather than treating it.
Can you order a harness you do not stock?
Yes, and at the moment most walking harnesses are out of stock. WhatsApp +91 90044 85093 or email bark@animeal.in with your dog's chest girth, weight and breed. We will confirm availability, price and timing before you commit.
