What Can I Give My Dog for Pain?
Nothing from your medicine cabinet. There is no human painkiller that is safe to give a dog without a vet telling you to, and the common ones cause serious harm.
This is the most searched question about dog pain in India, and it usually gets answered badly. So, plainly:
Dogs process painkillers very differently from people. A dose that is routine for an adult human can cause stomach ulcers, kidney failure or liver damage in a dog, and with some drugs the gap between a helpful dose and a harmful one is extremely small. Dog pain relief is calculated by body weight, by drug, and by the dog's kidney and liver function, which is why it needs a prescription rather than a guess.
What actually works, in order:

See a vet and get a proper diagnosis. Pain is a symptom. A limp can be a torn cruciate, a tick-borne infection, arthritis or a fracture, and the treatment for each is different.

Never Give a Dog These Painkillers
These are the drugs that put dogs in emergency clinics in India. All of them are in ordinary household medicine boxes.

Ibuprofen. Causes stomach ulcers, perforation and kidney failure in dogs. The margin between a tolerated dose and a damaging one is very small, and damage can follow a single dose.

Paracetamol. Toxic to a dog's liver and red blood cells at the wrong dose, and fatal to cats even in tiny amounts. If you keep both a dog and a cat, keep it locked away.

Aspirin. Dogs clear it very slowly, so it accumulates. It causes gastric bleeding and interferes with clotting, which matters if surgery follows.

Diclofenac and naproxen. Both are highly toxic to dogs and neither is licensed for them.

Human combination tablets. Cold, flu and body-pain combinations contain two or three actives at once. Giving one to get at the painkiller inside it means giving your dog everything else in the tablet too.

Leftover medicine from another pet. Wrong drug, wrong weight, wrong dose. A tablet sized for a 30kg Labrador is an overdose for a 6kg Shih Tzu.

How to Tell If Your Dog Is in Pain
Dogs hide pain. It is an instinct that made sense in the wild and is deeply unhelpful now. Most dogs will not cry, limp obviously or stop eating until the pain is significant, so you have to read smaller signals.
Movement
- Hesitating before jumping onto the sofa, into the car, or up stairs
- Slower to stand after lying down, stiff for the first few minutes
- Sitting oddly, shifting weight off one leg, or a changed gait
- Less interested in walks, or tiring much sooner
Behaviour
- Panting when it is not hot and they have not exercised
- Restlessness, circling, unable to settle into a comfortable position
- Hiding and withdrawing, or the opposite, unusual clinginess
- Snapping or flinching when touched in one particular place, even in a dog that never does that
- Licking one spot over and over
- Trembling, or a hunched back with the front end down and rear up, which often signals abdominal pain
A change in an old dog's willingness to move is very often pain, not age. "He is just getting old and slow" is the single most common reason arthritis goes untreated in India, and it is treatable.

These are what a vet will actually reach for. Knowing what they are helps you understand the plan you are given.
Veterinary NSAIDs
Carprofen, meloxicam and firocoxib are the mainstays for arthritis, injury and post-operative pain. They are formulated and dosed for dogs, which is the whole reason they are safer than anything in your medicine cabinet. Dogs on long-term NSAIDs usually need periodic blood tests to check liver and kidney function, and they should be given with food. Never combine two NSAIDs, and leave a proper gap if switching between them. Prescription required.
Gabapentin
Used for nerve pain, spinal problems and as an add-on when an NSAID alone is not enough. It is also used before stressful vet visits in anxious dogs. Mild sedation in the first few days is common and usually settles. Prescription required.
Tramadol
An opioid-type analgesic used in some chronic and post-operative cases. Prescription required.
Anti-inflammatory enzymes
Trypsin, bromelain and rutoside combinations, and serratiopeptidase, are used to reduce swelling after injury or surgery. They are supportive rather than primary pain control.
Joint supplements
Glucosamine, chondroitin, omega-3 and green-lipped mussel do not stop pain today. Over six to eight weeks they reduce inflammation and support cartilage, and for arthritic dogs they lower how much NSAID is needed over the year. Available without a prescription.

Pain Relief for Puppies
Puppies need more caution, not less.
Their liver and kidneys are still developing, which changes how they process a drug, and dosing is calculated on a body weight that changes week to week. Several pain medicines that are routine in adult dogs are not appropriate below a certain age. Never split an adult dog's tablet for a puppy: the dose is not proportional and many tablets are not designed to be divided.
A limping or clearly uncomfortable puppy needs a vet the same day rather than a wait-and-see. Puppies also mask pain less well than adults, so if a puppy is showing it, it usually means something.
Pain Medication for Dogs After Surgery
Post-operative pain is the one case where owners most often make an avoidable mistake, and it is this: stopping the medication early because the dog seems fine. The dog seems fine because the medication is working. Stopping it means the pain returns, the dog moves more than it should, and the healing site suffers.
What to get right:

Finish the full course exactly as prescribed, even on the days your dog looks normal.

Keep the cone on. A dog that licks a surgical site can open it in minutes.

Restrict activity for as long as you were told, not until the dog looks ready. Most dogs look ready long before the tissue is.

Check the incision daily for swelling, discharge, heat, gaping or a bad smell.

Do not add anything to the plan without asking your vet, including supplements and Ayurvedic products. Combining an NSAID with something else can cause harm.
Call your vet if your dog will not settle, cries, refuses food for more than a day, or if the incision changes.
What You Can Safely Do at Home
These help genuinely, cost little, and none of them can hurt your dog while you get to a vet.

Rest and restrict movement. No stairs, no jumping, short lead walks only. For a soft tissue injury this is most of the treatment.

Put grip on the floor. This is the most underrated fix in Indian homes. Tile and marble give an arthritic or weak-hipped dog nothing to push against, and every slip hurts and frightens them. Runners, rugs and yoga mats along their usual routes make an immediate difference.

Manage weight. For an arthritic dog, losing excess weight relieves more joint pain over a year than any tablet. It is also the hardest thing to do and the most worth doing.

Cold first, warmth later. For a fresh injury, a cold pack wrapped in a cloth for ten minutes helps in the first day or two. For long-standing stiffness, gentle warmth and a warm bed help more.

A supportive bed. Older dogs on hard floors stiffen up badly overnight. Orthopaedic foam, off the cold floor, changes how they get up in the morning.

Gentle, regular movement rather than none. Arthritic dogs stiffen with total rest. Short, frequent, flat walks beat one long weekend walk.

Wound Care and Ointment for Dog Wounds
For a small, clean, fresh wound the order of steps matters more than which product you pick.

Clean it first. Rinse with clean water or saline to flush out dirt and grit. An ointment applied over trapped debris seals the problem in.

Use an antiseptic. Dilute povidone-iodine or a chlorhexidine solution.

Apply a thin layer of a veterinary wound ointment, spray or powder.

Fit a cone. Not optional. A dog licks off a topical within a minute, which removes the treatment and means the dog swallows it.

Check it daily and keep it dry.
Do not use hydrogen peroxide repeatedly. It damages the healing tissue it is meant to protect. One initial clean at most, then saline.
See a vet instead of treating at home if: the wound is deep or gaping, it is a bite or a puncture, it is near an eye or a joint, it is bleeding heavily, it smells, there is pus, the surrounding skin is hot and swollen, or your dog seems unwell. Puncture wounds are the ones to worry about most: they look small and harmless, and they are the most likely to abscess, because the surface seals over bacteria driven deep inside.
