Smith+Nephew Bactigras Antiseptic Paraffin Gauze Dressing (10cm x 10cm) a sterile, medicated tulle gras wound contact dressing that has been trusted by clinicians and veterinary professionals worldwide for decades as a frontline intervention against wound infection. Composition:
- Chlorhexidine Acetate BP 0.5% w/w: Chlorhexidine Acetate is a broad-spectrum cationic bisbiguanide antiseptic with well-established bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity across a wide range of clinically relevant pathogens. At low concentrations (bacteriostatic level), chlorhexidine disrupts the osmotic equilibrium of the bacterial cell membrane, causing leakage of low-molecular-weight intracellular components. At higher concentrations (bactericidal level), it causes complete precipitation of cytoplasmic contents, irreversibly compromising cellular viability. It is active against the majority of Gram-positive organisms including Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA), Streptococcus species, and Enterococcus and most clinically significant Gram-negative bacteria including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, and Enterobacter. Importantly, chlorhexidine's antiseptic efficacy is not significantly compromised by the presence of blood or serum a clinically critical property given that wound environments are inherently protein-rich. Chlorhexidine Acetate is released slowly and continuously from the paraffin matrix over time, providing sustained antimicrobial protection at the wound surface across the dressing wear period.
- White Soft Paraffin BP: The paraffin base serves two complementary functions. First, it impregnates and lubricates the cotton gauze, creating a low-adherent wound contact layer that prevents the dressing from bonding to the wound bed or newly forming granulation tissue dramatically reducing pain and mechanical trauma on dressing removal and protecting the fragile healing surface. Second, it acts as the controlled-release matrix for chlorhexidine acetate, regulating the rate of antiseptic diffusion into the wound environment to sustain antimicrobial activity over the entire dressing period.
- Cotton Leno-Weave Gauze: The open, knitted leno-weave structure of the gauze substrate is specifically chosen for its biomechanical properties in wound contact applications. The open mesh allows free passage of viscous wound exudate through the dressing and into an overlying absorbent secondary dressing preventing fluid accumulation at the wound surface that would otherwise create a warm, moist, nutrient-rich environment conducive to pathogen proliferation. The leno weave also provides dimensional stability the dressing resists fraying when cut to shape and maintains structural integrity throughout the wear period, facilitating clean, atraumatic removal.
