About Product
Cytopoint 20 mg/mL Solution for Injection by Zoetis is a revolutionary, first-in-class caninised monoclonal antibody immunotherapeutic designed to provide targeted, long-lasting relief from the relentless itch associated with atopic dermatitis and allergic dermatitis in dogs. Unlike conventional pharmaceutical treatments that broadly suppress the immune system, Cytopoint works with precision at the molecular level, neutralising the single cytokine most responsible for transmitting itch signals in your canine companion's nervous system. Each 1 mL vial contains 20 mg of Lokivetmab, a biologically engineered antibody structurally identical to the antibodies your dog's own immune system naturally produces. The result is a safe, steroid-free injection that begins controlling allergic itch within one day and delivers sustained relief for four to eight weeks per dose. Animeal is proud to offer Cytopoint 20 mg/mL as part of its commitment to bringing the most advanced, clinically validated dermatological therapies to pet parents who refuse to let their dogs suffer in silence.
Ingredients:
Lokivetmab (Active Ingredient) 20 mg per 1 mL vial: Lokivetmab is a caninised monoclonal antibody (IgG4 subclass) produced via recombinant DNA technology using Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cell expression systems. "Caninised" means the antibody's protein framework is structurally modelled on a canine immunoglobulin scaffold, minimising the risk of anti-drug antibody formation that would occur with foreign protein structures. Lokivetmab targets and binds with high specificity to canine interleukin-31 (IL-31), a pro-inflammatory cytokine secreted predominantly by activated Th2 lymphocytes, mast cells, and eosinophils in allergic skin conditions. When IL-31 binds to its heterodimeric receptor complex (IL-31RA and OSMR) on cutaneous nerve fibres and keratinocytes, it triggers a cascade of downstream JAK-STAT signalling that transmits pruritic (itch) signals to the brain and drives the chronic inflammatory skin cycle of atopic dermatitis. Lokivetmab binds IL-31 before this receptor engagement can occur, completely blocking the itch signalling pathway at its upstream source. Because it acts exclusively on IL-31 without broad immune suppression, the treatment does not compromise the dog's capacity to fight infections, respond to vaccines, or regulate other immune functions.
Histidine and Histidine Hydrochloride Monohydrate (Excipient Buffer): This amino acid buffer pair maintains the formulation's pH at a stable physiological range throughout the shelf life of the product. Histidine acts as an excellent stabilising buffer for monoclonal antibody solutions, protecting the protein structure of Lokivetmab from acid-mediated denaturation or aggregation during storage and administration.
Trehalose Dihydrate (Cryoprotectant and Stabiliser): Trehalose is a disaccharide sugar that stabilises the three-dimensional protein structure of Lokivetmab in liquid formulation by forming hydrogen bonds with the antibody's polar residues, preventing misfolding, aggregation, and loss of bioactivity under thermal or mechanical stress. It serves as a critical formulation excipient for the long-term potency maintenance of the biological product under refrigerated storage.
Methionine (Antioxidant): Methionine is an amino acid included to protect Lokivetmab from oxidative degradation. As an antioxidant excipient in injectable biologics, methionine preferentially oxidises before the antibody's own methionine residues can be oxidised by reactive oxygen species, thereby preserving the binding efficacy and structural integrity of the active protein over the product's two-year shelf life.
Polysorbate 80 (Surfactant): Polysorbate 80 is a non-ionic surfactant that prevents Lokivetmab molecules from aggregating or adsorbing onto the glass vial surfaces or syringe walls during storage and handling. It reduces surface tension at air-liquid and solid-liquid interfaces, maintaining a consistent, particle-free solution that is safe for subcutaneous injection.
Disodium Edetate (Chelating Agent): Disodium edetate (EDTA) chelates trace metal ions in the solution that could otherwise catalyse oxidative degradation of the antibody protein, providing an additional layer of formulation stability.
Water for Injections: Sterile, pyrogen-free water serves as the aqueous solvent base for the solution.
Features and Benefits
Precision Targeting of the Itch Signal at Its S...
Precision Targeting of the Itch Signal at Its Source:
Cytopoint is the first and only veterinary-licensed monoclonal antibody that specifically neutralises canine IL-31, the primary cytokine responsible for transmitting itch signals in allergic skin disease. Unlike antihistamines, corticosteroids, or broad immunosuppressants, it does not generalise across the immune system but instead intercepts the exact molecular message that tells your dog's brain to itch, alleviating pruritus with a level of precision that no previous veterinary dermatology therapy has been able to achieve.
Rapid Onset with Long-Lasting Relief:
Clinical studies have demonstrated that Cytopoint begins reducing itch within 24 hours of a single subcutaneous injection, with sustained relief lasting four to eight weeks per dose in most dogs. This long duration of action means your canine companion can experience weeks of comfort, skin healing, and restored quality of life between veterinary visits, replacing the burden of daily oral medication with a simple, reliable injectable schedule.
Structurally Identical to Your Dog's Own Immune Proteins:
Because Lokivetmab is a caninised antibody, it is biologically and structurally recognised by your dog's immune system as a self-protein rather than a foreign substance. This greatly reduces the risk of treatment-related immune reactions and makes Cytopoint one of the safest long-term treatment options available for managing chronic atopic dermatitis in dogs across all age groups and breeds.
No Pressure on the Liver or Kidneys:
Unlike chemical-based anti-pruritic drugs such as corticosteroids, Cytopoint does not undergo hepatic metabolism or renal clearance as a small-molecule pharmaceutical. As a biologic antibody, it is processed through normal protein catabolism pathways, meaning it does not impose pharmacological burden on your dog's liver or kidneys, making it a particularly valuable option for older dogs or those with concurrent metabolic conditions.
Proven Safety Alongside a Wide Range of Concomitant Medications:
Field safety studies involving hundreds of canine patients confirm that Cytopoint is safely co-administered with a broad range of medications commonly prescribed in atopic dermatitis management, including antiparasitics, antibiotics, antifungals, corticosteroids, allergen-specific immunotherapy, antihistamines, oclacitinib, and cyclosporine. No clinically significant drug interactions have been identified, making it a versatile cornerstone of multimodal dermatological care.
Allows Damaged Skin to Begin Healing:
By eliminating the itch-scratch cycle that perpetuates secondary skin damage, epidermal breakdown, and bacterial superinfection in atopic dogs, Cytopoint creates the physiological quiet that allows inflamed skin to recover. Dogs receiving Cytopoint consistently demonstrate measurable improvements in CADESI (Canine Atopic Dermatitis Extent and Severity Index) scores alongside owner-reported reductions in scratching, licking, and chewing behaviour.
Usage and Applications
How to Use:Cytopoint 20 mg/mL must be administe...
How to Use:
Cytopoint 20 mg/mL must be administered exclusively by a licensed veterinary professional as a subcutaneous (under the skin) injection and is not approved or safe for home administration. The attending veterinarian will determine the appropriate dose and number of vials required based on the dog's body weight, with a minimum recommended dose of 2 mg/kg. For the 20 mg vial presentation, the entire contents of the vial must be aseptically drawn and administered as a single injection. For dogs requiring a combination of vials, the contents of each required vial must be withdrawn into the same syringe; gently invert the loaded syringe three to four times to allow mixing before administration. Avoid excessive shaking or foaming of the solution at all times. Each vial is for single use only and contains no preservative; any unused contents must be inactivated and discarded immediately following opening. Only sterile, new syringes and needles should be used for each administration. Do not sterilise equipment with chemical disinfectants, as residual traces may inactivate the biological product. If vaccines are being administered during the same visit, Cytopoint must be injected at a separate anatomical site on the body. Repeat administration every four to eight weeks as clinically assessed by the attending veterinarian.
Storage Advice:
Store unopened Cytopoint 20 mg/mL in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C, stored upright in the original cardboard packaging to protect from light. Do not freeze under any circumstances, as freezing irreversibly damages the biological structure of Lokivetmab and renders the product inactive. Prolonged exposure to temperatures above 8°C or direct sunlight may adversely affect the potency of the solution. Once the vial has been opened, the contents must be used immediately and any remaining product must be discarded; the opened vial cannot be stored or reused. Keep out of the sight and reach of children at all times. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the vial label and outer carton.
