What antibacterial/antifungal ointments do (Dogs & Cats, all life stages)
These dermatology topicals deliver actives right where they’re needed for localized bacterial or fungal skin infections. The occlusive ointment base forms a protective film that helps medication stay in place and shields the lesion from dirt and moisture.
How it works (simple science)
-
Antibacterial active (per label) (e.g., mupirocin or fusidic acid) → reduces susceptible bacteria on the lesion.
-
Antifungal (if included) (e.g., an imidazole) → targets susceptible yeasts/dermatophytes.
-
Derm-grade emollient base → creates a protective, moisture-sealing layer, reducing friction and contamination.
-
Mild steroid (only if listed) → may reduce inflammation, but requires vet guidance and is not for eye/ear canal use unless prescribed.
