Kong Chew Toys for Dogs

Kong is the American rubber toy brand most vets and trainers name first, and the reason is not the rubber. It is that a Kong is designed to be filled. A dog with a stuffed Kong has a job to do for twenty minutes, and twenty minutes of work does more for a bored or anxious dog than an hour of a squeaky toy. Most People Use a Kong Classic Wrong

The Kong Classic is not a chew toy. It is a food puzzle shaped like a chew toy. Handed over empty, most dogs sniff it, bat it once and walk away, and the owner concludes Kong is overrated.

Filled, the same toy does something no other dog toy does. The dog has to lick, tip, roll and work at it to get the food out. That is slow, repetitive, nose-led work, and it is genuinely calming in a way that fetch is not.

How to fill one:

• Start easy. A first Kong should be loose and simple so the dog wins quickly. Kibble with a smear of curd or plain peanut butter at the opening
• Then make it harder. Pack it tighter, put the tasty part deeper, plug the wide end
• Then freeze it. A frozen Kong takes three or four times as long and, in Mumbai heat, dogs love it. Fill it, stand it upright in a mug, freeze overnight
• Count it as food. Whatever goes in the Kong comes out of the day's meal, or you will have a fat dog wondering why

Safe fillings: the dog's own kibble, plain curd, boiled chicken, pumpkin, banana, plain unsalted peanut butter. Never: anything with xylitol, which is in some sugar free peanut butters and is lethal to dogs. Also no chocolate, no grapes, no raisins, no onion, no cooked bone.

The Kong Colour Code, Explained

Kong colours are not decoration. Each one is a different rubber hardness, and picking by colour matters more than picking by shape.

We carry Classic and Puppy. If you need the black Extreme or the purple Senior, ask us and we will source it, using the block below. A power chewer given a red Classic will get through it, and that is a fault of the choice rather than the toy.

Which Size?

When in doubt, size up. A toy too big is merely awkward. A toy small enough to swallow or lodge at the back of the throat is an emergency. Go by your dog's weight, not by breed name, and if your dog sits between two sizes take the larger.

• Small for toy breeds and small dogs under about 9 kg
• Medium for roughly 7 to 15 kg. Indies, Beagles, Cockers
• Large for roughly 15 to 30 kg. Labradors, Goldens, most Indian street dogs
• Extra large for 30 kg and up. German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Danes

A Kong Is a Behaviour Tool, Not Just a Toy

This is where a Kong earns its price, and it is the reason trainers reach for one.

Separation anxiety and being left alone

Give a frozen stuffed Kong as you leave, not after you get back. The dog learns that you leaving is the moment the good thing appears. Done consistently it changes how the dog feels about the door closing. It is not a cure for real separation anxiety, but it is the first thing most behaviourists ask you to try.

Diwali and firework nights

A frozen Kong given before the noise starts, in the quietest room of the house with a fan or music on, gives an anxious dog something to do with its mouth instead of pacing. Prepare several in advance and freeze them. If your dog is badly affected, look at our anxiety care range as well and speak to your vet in the weeks before, not on the night.

Crate training and puppies

A puppy that only ever gets the Kong inside the crate learns to walk into the crate on its own. Use the soft Puppy version, not the red Classic, because milk teeth and adult rubber are a bad match.

A dog that chews the furniture

Chewing is a need, not a habit. A dog with nothing to chew will find something, and it will be your chappals. Giving an acceptable outlet works far better than telling the dog off after the fact.

Safety and When to Throw It Away

• Check the toy every week. Once a dog has chewed through the rubber and pieces can come off, bin it. Swallowed rubber can cause a blockage that needs surgery
• Supervise the first few sessions with any new toy, and always with a determined chewer
• Never leave a hard toy with a dog that has a broken or loose tooth
• Wash it. Food dries inside a Kong and goes off. Warm soapy water and a bottle brush, or the top rack of a dishwasher if you have one
• One dog, one Kong. Two dogs and one stuffed toy is how fights start. Feed them in separate rooms

What do you put in a Kong?

What size Kong does my dog need?

Go by weight, not breed, and size up if your dog falls between two. Small under about 9 kg, medium roughly 7 to 15 kg, large roughly 15 to 30 kg, extra large above 30 kg. A toy that is too small is a choking risk, and that is the only sizing mistake that actually matters.

Can puppies use a Kong dog chew?

Yes, but the soft blue or pink Puppy version, not the red Classic. Puppy rubber is made for milk teeth. A frozen puppy Kong also helps with teething discomfort.

How do I clean a Kong?

Warm soapy water and a bottle brush, or the top rack of a dishwasher. Do it after every use, because dried food inside goes off and you will not see it.
