Mifex Oral Suspension, manufactured by Elanco India Pvt Ltd, is a cutting-edge veterinary-grade oral liquid feed supplement specifically formulated to address one of the most economically significant and health-threatening conditions in dairy farming milk fever (hypocalcaemia) and its associated macro-mineral deficiencies, including hypomagnesaemia and hypophosphataemia. Occurring most commonly in high-yielding cattle, buffaloes, sheep, and goats in the periparturient (around-calving) period, these mineral imbalances can cause muscle weakness, recumbency, impaired immune function, reduced milk production, and in severe cases, life-threatening metabolic collapse. Mifex Oral Suspension delivers Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Vitamin D3, Vitamin B12, and carbohydrates in ideal proportions through a highly bioavailable oral liquid format, making it practical for large-scale herd management and routine supplementation on dairy farms of all sizes. Animeal is proud to offer Mifex Oral Suspension as part of its trusted livestock health portfolio, empowering farmers and veterinary professionals with a reliable solution to protect and optimise the health and productivity of your dairy animals.
Ingredients:
- Calcium (as Dibasic Calcium Phosphate / Calcium Borogluconate): Calcium is the principal macro-mineral in Mifex Oral Suspension. At the cellular level, calcium is essential for muscle contraction including cardiac and smooth muscle nerve impulse transmission, and the secretory processes involved in milk synthesis. During peak lactation, a high-yielding cow can mobilise up to 30g of calcium per day into milk, far exceeding dietary intake, which triggers hypocalcaemia. The dibasic (dicalcium phosphate) form used in oral supplements offers superior bioavailability over elemental calcium sources, facilitating rapid intestinal absorption via active transport mechanisms dependent on Vitamin D3. Calcium is maintained in a 2:1 ratio with phosphorus in this formulation, the scientifically validated ratio for maximum skeletal uptake and homeostatic balance.
- Magnesium: Magnesium (Mg²⁺) plays a pivotal co-regulatory role in calcium metabolism by supporting the activity of parathyroid hormone (PTH) the primary hormonal driver of calcium mobilisation from bone reserves and enhanced intestinal absorption. Magnesium deficiency (hypomagnesaemia) blunts PTH secretion and peripheral tissue responsiveness, directly worsening hypocalcaemia. At the neuromuscular level, adequate magnesium is critical for preventing tetanic spasms, hyperexcitability, and nervous system dysregulation hallmarks of grass tetany in cattle and sheep. Magnesium also serves as a cofactor for ATP synthesis and over 300 enzymatic reactions involved in energy metabolism, protein synthesis, and immune cell function.
- Phosphorus: Phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in the body and is intrinsically linked to calcium metabolism. It is essential for the formation of hydroxyapatite crystals in bone matrix, ATP (adenosine triphosphate) energy production, phospholipid membrane integrity, and the enzymatic reactions governing carbohydrate and protein metabolism. Hypophosphataemia low blood phosphorus frequently accompanies milk fever and contributes to post-partum recumbency even after calcium correction. The phosphorus in Mifex Oral Suspension restores serum phosphate levels and supports rapid recovery of muscle function and energy metabolism in periparturient animals.
- Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol): Vitamin D3 is the master regulator of calcium and phosphorus homeostasis. Once ingested, cholecalciferol is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and subsequently in the kidneys to the biologically active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol). Calcitriol upregulates the expression of calcium-binding proteins (calbindins) in intestinal epithelial cells, dramatically increasing active calcium absorption from the gut. It also stimulates osteoclast-mediated calcium mobilisation from bone and enhances renal calcium reabsorption. Supplementation with Vitamin D3 in Mifex Oral is critical to ensuring that the calcium and phosphorus delivered in the formulation is fully utilised by your animal's body rather than passing unabsorbed.
- Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin): Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble, cobalt-containing vitamin essential for the synthesis of red blood cells through the maturation of megaloblastic precursors in bone marrow. In ruminants, cobalt-deficient diets impair the ruminal microbial synthesis of B12, leading to metabolic anaemia, weight loss, reduced appetite, and impaired energy metabolism. At the biochemical level, B12 acts as a cofactor for methylmalonyl-CoA mutase a key enzyme in propionate metabolism which is the principal gluconeogenic precursor in ruminants. By supporting this pathway, B12 in Mifex Oral helps maintain energy balance and combat metabolic stress during the high-demand periparturient period.
- Carbohydrates (Dextrose/Glucose): The carbohydrate fraction in Mifex Oral Suspension, primarily in the form of dextrose (glucose), provides an immediate and readily bioavailable source of energy to counter the negative energy balance seen during peak lactation. Dextrose also plays a vital role in preventing acetonaemia (ketosis) a common metabolic disorder in dairy cattle where deficient glucose availability drives the liver to produce ketone bodies, leading to appetite suppression, reduced milk yield, and systemic toxicity. By maintaining adequate blood glucose levels, the carbohydrate component in Mifex Oral directly supports sustained milk production and rapid post-partum recovery.
