About Product

What Is Royal Canin Renal Support Early Consult Cat Dry Food?

If your vet has just told you that your cat's kidney values are elevated or that they are showing early signs of CKD (chronic kidney disease - a condition where the kidneys gradually lose their ability to filter waste from the blood), Royal Canin Renal Support Early Consult is the food they are most likely to recommend at this stage. It is a complete veterinary dry food for adult cats, formulated specifically for the earliest stages of kidney disease - before the condition has progressed to a point where more aggressive dietary restriction is needed. The formula uses moderate phosphorus restriction, a concentrated dose of EPA+DHA (long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil that support kidney cell health), a full antioxidant complex, and a joint-support ingredient called New Zealand Green Mussel - all in a single daily food that also supports healthy digestion.

This is a veterinary diet. Use only under the recommendation and ongoing supervision of your vet.

Who Is This For?

This food is the right choice if your cat:

  • Has been diagnosed with early-stage CKD (chronic kidney disease), typically IRIS Stage 1 or Stage 2 (IRIS is the International Renal Interest Society - the global body that defines the four stages of cat kidney disease based on blood and urine values)
  • Has been flagged by a vet with elevated creatinine, SDMA (a blood marker that detects kidney disease earlier than creatinine), or BUN (blood urea nitrogen - another waste product the kidneys should be filtering out)
  • Is an adult cat over 7 years old whose annual blood panel has shown borderline kidney markers that need dietary support now, before values worsen
  • Has been recommended a low-phosphorus diet by a vet but has not yet been diagnosed with advanced kidney disease
  • Also needs joint and urinary tract support alongside kidney care - the formula covers all three
  • Is a cat who may be difficult to feed during illness - the formula comes in multiple textures and formats across the Renal Support range so you can mix and match to keep your cat eating consistently
  • Is currently on any other early-CKD management protocol your vet has prescribed

This food is not appropriate for cats with advanced CKD (IRIS Stage 3 or 4) without specific vet guidance, as those stages may require stronger phosphorus restriction. It is also not suitable for kittens or for healthy adult cats without a kidney concern.

Composition - What's In It?

  • Corn and brewers rice - easily digestible carbohydrate sources that provide energy without adding phosphorus load to the kidneys. Keeping total phosphorus from all sources low is the core goal of this diet.
  • Wheat gluten and corn gluten meal - plant-based protein sources used here intentionally. Plant proteins tend to carry less phosphorus per gram of protein than meat-based proteins, which helps reduce the overall phosphorus burden on kidneys that are already struggling to excrete it.
  • Chicken by-product meal - a concentrated animal protein source that keeps protein intake adequate while staying within the moderate levels recommended for early CKD management. Cats are obligate carnivores (they must eat animal protein to survive), so protein cannot be eliminated - it must be carefully calibrated.
  • Pea fiber and dried chicory root - sources of dietary fiber and prebiotics (food for the beneficial bacteria in the gut). In cats with CKD, gut bacteria play an active role in managing uremic toxins (waste products like urea that the kidneys cannot fully filter). A healthy gut environment reduces the burden these toxins place on the body.
  • Fish oil - the primary source of EPA+DHA (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid - the two most important long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids). At 0.45% EPA+DHA minimum in this diet, these fatty acids help reduce inflammation in kidney tissue and support the blood flow (glomerular filtration) the kidneys need to keep functioning.
  • Dried tomato pomace and powdered psyllium seed husk - additional fiber sources that support stool consistency and help create an environment in the colon where uremic toxins are trapped and excreted rather than reabsorbed into the blood.
  • Potassium citrate and potassium chloride - cats with CKD often lose potassium through the kidneys. Low potassium (hypokalemia) in cats causes muscle weakness and worsens kidney function. These two forms replenish it directly through the diet.
  • Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) - prebiotics that feed the gut's beneficial bacteria. Together with the fiber blend, they help maintain a microbiome (the community of bacteria living in the gut) that supports toxin management during kidney disease.
  • New Zealand Green Mussel - a natural source of glucosamine and chondroitin, which support joint cartilage health. Many cats with early CKD are middle-aged to senior cats who also deal with joint stiffness. This ingredient addresses that overlap without needing a separate supplement.
  • Glucosamine hydrochloride (727 mg/kg min.) and Chondroitin sulfate (76 mg/kg min.) - joint support compounds that support cartilage integrity (the smooth tissue cushioning your cat's joints). Measured and confirmed at meaningful levels in this formula.
  • Vitamin E (420 IU/kg min.) and Ascorbic acid/Vitamin C (240 mg/kg min.) - two key antioxidants (compounds that protect cells from damage caused by oxidative stress - a process that accelerates in diseased tissues including kidneys). These levels are significantly higher than in a standard cat food.
  • Hydrolyzed yeast - a source of nucleotides and B-vitamins. Supports immune function and helps the gut stay healthy during the metabolic stress that kidney disease places on the body.
  • L-carnitine, taurine, L-lysine - essential amino acids and conditionally essential nutrients that cats cannot produce in sufficient amounts when unwell. Taurine supports heart function, which matters because CKD and heart disease often develop together in senior cats.
  • S/O Index formulation - the food is designed to create a urinary environment that discourages the formation of both struvite and calcium oxalate crystals (the two most common types of bladder and kidney crystals in cats). This matters because cats with CKD are already at higher risk of urinary complications.

Guaranteed Analysis (dry matter): Crude Protein: 26.0% min | Crude Fat: 12.0% min | Crude Fiber: 6.4% max | Moisture: 8.0% max | Phosphorus: 0.7% max | EPA+DHA: 0.45% min | Vitamin E: 420 IU/kg min | Vitamin C: 240 mg/kg min | Glucosamine: 727 mg/kg min | Chondroitin sulfate: 76 mg/kg min

This is a complete veterinary prescription diet formulated for cats with specific kidney health conditions. Use only under veterinary guidance. Do not feed without your vet's recommendation.

How to Use It

Serve daily as the cat's sole food source. Do not mix with a standard adult cat food, as doing so dilutes the phosphorus restriction and reduces the therapeutic effect of the diet. Fresh water must always be available - cats with kidney disease need high water intake to support kidney function, and a water fountain often helps increase how much a cat drinks voluntarily.

If your cat is not eating enough or is refusing this food, do not skip meals or force-feed. Contact your vet. Inappetence (reduced appetite) is common in cats with kidney disease and your vet may adjust the protocol, recommend a wet version of this diet, or combine formats from the Renal Support range.

Transitioning onto this food:

A slow transition reduces the risk of digestive upset and gives your cat time to accept the new taste. Take 2 to 4 weeks rather than the usual 7 to 10 days for cats with CKD, as their systems are already stressed.

  • Days 1 to 3: 75% current food + 25% Royal Canin Renal Support Early Consult
  • Days 4 to 6: 50% current food + 50% new food
  • Days 7 to 9: 25% current food + 75% new food
  • Day 10 onward: 100% Royal Canin Renal Support Early Consult

If your cat refuses at any stage, slow the transition further and consult your vet. Do not rush - consistent eating is more important than a fast transition.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Reseal the bag tightly after every use. Use within 6 to 8 weeks of opening.

Feeding Guide

Daily amounts are based on the cat's ideal body weight. These are starting amounts only - your vet may adjust based on your cat's current kidney stage, body condition, and whether wet food is also being used.

Cat's Ideal Body Weight Daily Amount (dry food only)
2 kg 26 g per day
3 kg 36 g per day
4 kg 45 g per day
5 kg 53 g per day
6 kg 61 g per day

If combining with wet Renal Support food (loaf in sauce or other formats from the range), ask your vet for a mixed feeding guide. The Renal Support range is formulated so that all formats can be mixed and matched without compromising the overall phosphorus and nutrient targets.

Divide the daily amount across 2 or 3 meals. Some cats with kidney disease prefer smaller, more frequent meals to avoid nausea.

Common Questions

  • Q: My vet said my cat's kidney values are slightly elevated. Do I need to start a renal diet now?
A: Yes, in most cases - and that is exactly what this product is designed for. Starting a renal diet at the early stage (IRIS Stage 1 or 2) has been shown to slow the progression of CKD and reduce the workload on the kidneys while values are still manageable. Waiting until the disease is more advanced makes it harder to slow the decline. Your vet is the right person to confirm the timing, but the direction of nutritional science strongly supports early dietary intervention.
  • Q: My cat is not eating this food. What should I do?
A: Do not force the transition. Start by mixing a very small amount (10-15%) into the existing food and increase extremely slowly over 2 to 4 weeks. Slightly warming the food releases more aroma and often helps reluctant cats accept it. If your cat still refuses, ask your vet about the wet version of Renal Support Early Consult - the loaf in sauce format is often better accepted by cats who dislike dry food textures. Never let a cat with kidney disease go without food for more than 24 hours.
  • Q: Can I give this food alongside supplements my vet has prescribed?
A: Most vets prescribing this diet will review any supplements at the same time, because the formula already includes meaningful levels of antioxidants, Omega-3s, joint support, and potassium. Adding phosphorus binders, potassium supplements, or other kidney-support products should only be done if your vet specifically advises it on top of this diet. Do not add supplements independently as they may interfere with the dietary balance this formula has been calibrated to.
  • Q: How long does my cat need to stay on this food?
A: For most cats with CKD, this becomes a lifelong diet. The condition is not reversible, and the dietary management that slows its progression must continue consistently. Your vet will monitor kidney values at regular intervals (typically every 3 to 6 months) and may adjust the formula or add additional interventions as the disease progresses. Do not discontinue without veterinary advice, even if your cat appears to be doing well.
  • Q: Is there a wet food version of this diet?
A: Yes. Royal Canin makes a Renal Support Early Consult Loaf in Sauce wet food that is formulated to the same nutritional targets as this dry version. Vets often recommend using both together because wet food increases total water intake, which is important for kidney function. Both formats are compatible and can be mixed and matched across meals.
