About Product
What Is Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Puppy Can?
If your puppy is experiencing loose stools, vomiting, or has just been weaned and is struggling to make the shift from milk to solid food, Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Puppy Can is a complete veterinary wet food formulated specifically for puppies with sensitive or compromised digestive systems. It delivers a soft, mousse-style loaf in sauce that is easy to eat and easy to digest, built around highly digestible ingredients like poultry and pork by-products, rice flour, and wheat gluten - with a high-energy profile to support the rapid growth needs of puppies at the same time as their gut heals.
This is a veterinary diet. Use only under the guidance and recommendation of your vet.
Who Is This For?
This food is the right choice if your puppy:
- Has been diagnosed with gastrointestinal (GI) disturbance - meaning digestive problems like diarrhoea, loose stools, vomiting, or stomach upset
- Is newly weaned and struggling to transition from mother's milk to solid food, with signs of digestive sensitivity
- Has been prescribed a low-fat, highly digestible diet by your vet following a stomach infection, parvovirus recovery, or dietary indiscretion (eating something they should not have)
- Is showing reduced appetite due to digestive discomfort and needs a soft, palatable texture to encourage eating
- Is a puppy between 2 and 12 months old whose adult body weight is expected to be between 5 kg and 40 kg
- Has been discharged from a vet clinic after treatment for a GI condition and needs a recovery diet at home
- Needs a food that will not put extra strain on the gut while they are on medication
This food is not intended for healthy adult dogs or puppies without a diagnosed digestive condition. Once your puppy has recovered, your vet will advise when to transition back to a standard puppy food.
Composition - What's In It?
- Meats and animal by-products (including poultry and pork by-products) - the primary protein source. Poultry and pork by-products are specifically selected here because they are highly digestible (the gut breaks them down with less effort), which reduces the workload on an already stressed digestive system.
- Rice flour - a gentle, easily absorbed carbohydrate source. Rice is one of the most commonly recommended grains during GI recovery because it is bland, low in fibre, and unlikely to trigger further irritation.
- Wheat gluten - a highly digestible protein that supports the total protein content without adding bulk that could aggravate the gut.
- Cereals and by-products of vegetable origin - provide additional carbohydrate energy. These are processed to maximise digestibility in this formula.
- Milk and dairy products - contribute protein and palatability. Particularly useful during weaning, where familiar milk-based flavours encourage food acceptance in young puppies.
- Oils and fats - deliver concentrated energy. Puppies have high energy requirements for growth, and wet food alone needs to compensate for lower caloric density compared to dry food.
- Yeasts - a natural source of prebiotics (food for the beneficial bacteria in the gut). Prebiotics help restore a healthy balance of gut bacteria (the microbiome) after illness, stress, or dietary change disrupts it.
- Vitamin D3 (130 IU/kg) - essential for calcium absorption and healthy bone development. Puppies are building their skeletal structure rapidly and need adequate Vitamin D to use dietary calcium correctly.
- Iron, Iodine, Copper, Manganese, Zinc - essential trace minerals (micronutrients needed in small amounts) for immune function, enzyme activity, and normal puppy development.
- Clinoptilolite of sedimentary origin (2.1 g/kg) - a natural mineral (a type of zeolite) that acts as a binder in the gut, helping to firm up loose stools by absorbing excess water in the intestine.
Analytical Constituents (as fed): Crude Protein: 10.0% | Crude Oils and Fats: 5.8% | Crude Ash: 2.2% | Crude Fibre: 0.8% | Moisture: 78.5% | Calcium: 0.32% | Omega-6 Fatty Acids: 1.2% | Omega-3 Fatty Acids: 0.2% | Metabolisable Energy: 977 kcal/kg
This is a complete veterinary prescription diet formulated for puppies with specific digestive conditions. Use only under veterinary guidance. Do not feed without your vet's recommendation.
How to Use It
Serve directly from the can at room temperature or slightly warmed to enhance aroma and palatability for puppies with a reduced appetite. Always provide fresh water alongside every meal. This is a complete food - no additional supplements or food sources are needed unless your vet specifically advises otherwise.
Do not mix with a different puppy food in the same meal without consulting your vet. If your vet instructs a gradual transition back to a standard food after recovery, introduce the new food slowly over 7 to 10 days.
Once opened: Transfer unused portions to an airtight container and refrigerate. Use within 24 hours. Do not leave opened food at room temperature.
Transition guide (when moving off this diet after recovery, as directed by your vet):
- Days 1 and 2: 75% Royal Canin GI Puppy Can + 25% new food
- Days 3 and 4: 50% Royal Canin GI Puppy Can + 50% new food
- Days 5 and 6: 25% Royal Canin GI Puppy Can + 75% new food
- Day 7 onward: 100% new food
If loose stools return during the transition, slow the pace and inform your vet.
Feeding Guide
Daily feeding amounts are given in number of cans (each can = 195 g). These quantities are based on the puppy's expected adult body weight and current age in months. Always follow your vet's specific recommendation - this table is a reference guide only.
Daily amounts in number of cans per day (for dry cans only):
| Expected Adult Weight | 1-2 months | 3-4 months | 5-6 months | 7-8 months | 9-10 months | 11-12 months |

| 40 kg adult | 3 + 1/2 - 5 + 1/2 | 7 + 1/2 - 8 | 9 + 1/2 - 10 + 1/2 | 10 + 1/2 - 10 | 9 + 1/2 - 8 + 1/2 | 8 - 7 + 1/2 |
Amounts shown are for this wet food fed alone (not mixed with dry food). If your vet has advised a combination of wet and dry food, they will provide adjusted quantities. Divide the daily amount across 3 to 4 meals for younger puppies (under 4 months) and 2 to 3 meals for older puppies.
Common Questions
-
Q: My puppy has diarrhoea. Can I start this food without seeing a vet?
A: We strongly recommend visiting your vet before starting any veterinary diet, including this one. Loose stools in puppies can have several causes - some minor, others serious, like parvovirus infection. A vet visit rules out anything dangerous and ensures the right treatment plan. Most vets will recommend this diet as part of recovery and will guide you on how long to feed it. -
Q: How long does my puppy need to stay on this food?
A: The duration depends entirely on your vet's assessment and the underlying cause of the digestive issue. For mild GI upset, some puppies return to a standard diet within 1 to 2 weeks. For more serious conditions like parvovirus recovery or chronic GI sensitivity, a longer period may be needed. Do not switch back to a regular food until your vet gives the go-ahead. -
Q: Can I mix this can with dry kibble?
A: You can mix wet and dry food if your vet approves it, but do not combine this GI diet with a non-GI dry food without asking your vet first. The therapeutic benefit of this formula depends on the complete digestive profile - mixing in a standard kibble may reduce that effect. If your vet has prescribed both a wet and dry GI diet from Royal Canin, mixing those two together is fine. -
Q: My puppy is not eating much. Will this food help?
A: Yes. The mousse texture and sauce base are specifically designed to be easy to eat and palatable for puppies with a reduced appetite due to digestive discomfort. The slightly warm temperature (room temperature or gently warmed) also releases more aroma, which encourages hesitant puppies to approach the bowl. If your puppy still refuses food after 24 hours, contact your vet. -
Q: Is this food safe for very young puppies who are just being weaned?
A: Yes. The soft loaf-in-sauce texture was specifically designed to ease the weaning transition - from mother's milk or milk replacer to solid food. It bridges the gap in texture and is formulated to meet the energy and growth needs of young puppies. Speak to your vet about when and how to introduce it during the weaning window.
