Ingredients:
Fipronil (9.8% w/v): Fipronil is a broad-spectrum insecticide and acaricide belonging to the phenylpyrazole chemical class, developed in the late 1980s and now one of the most extensively validated ectoparasiticides in veterinary medicine globally. Following topical application to the skin between a cat's shoulder blades, fipronil is taken up into the sebaceous glands of the skin and redistributed continuously across the entire body surface through the skin's natural lipid secretions. This depot mechanism ensures that parasites are exposed to lethal concentrations of the active ingredient even when they land on parts of the body remote from the original application site. At the cellular level, fipronil exerts its insecticidal and acaricidal action by blocking the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-gated chloride channel complex in the insect and arachnid nervous system. GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter of the invertebrate central nervous system; by binding to and obstructing the GABA receptor-associated chloride channel, fipronil prevents the influx of chloride ions into neuronal cells, removing inhibitory control of nerve signalling. The result is uncontrolled neuronal hyperexcitation, manifesting as rapid convulsions and death in susceptible parasites including adult fleas (Ctenocephalides felis, Ctenocephalides canis), ticks (Rhipicephalus spp., Ixodes spp., Haemaphysalis spp.), and biting lice (Felicola subrostratus). Critically, fipronil's selectivity for invertebrate GABA receptors over mammalian receptors is approximately 700 to 1,300 times greater, underpinning its excellent safety profile in cats when used at the recommended dose.
S-Methoprene (11.8% w/v): S-Methoprene is a juvenile hormone analogue (JHA), a class of insect growth regulators (IGR) that mimics the structure and biological activity of juvenile hormone, a naturally occurring hormonal compound that regulates insect development. In the flea life cycle, juvenile hormone must decline to undetectable levels for an immature flea to successfully complete metamorphosis and emerge as a biting adult. S-Methoprene artificially maintains elevated juvenile hormone levels throughout the development of flea eggs and larvae, pharmacologically preventing the hormonal transition required for pupation and adult emergence. Fleas whose eggs or larvae are exposed to S-Methoprene either fail to hatch, fail to develop beyond the larval stage, or die before completing metamorphosis. S-Methoprene has no adulticidal activity against fleas or any effect on ticks; its role is exclusively to break the generational cycle of flea reproduction, addressing the 95% of the flea population that exists as eggs, larvae, and pupae in the environment rather than on the host. By inhibiting flea egg development for up to six weeks following application, S-Methoprene ensures that even fleas that briefly contact the treated cat cannot successfully seed a new infestation in the household. Importantly, S-Methoprene is selectively active only in invertebrates, as mammals lack juvenile hormone entirely, giving it an exceptional mammalian safety profile.
