About Vetsense SuperLacto Weaning Formula
Newborn puppies and kittens that cannot feed from their mother need a milk made for them. Cow's milk is too low in fat and protein and too high in milk sugar for them.
Vetsense SuperLacto Weaning Formula is a milk replacer powder for puppies and kittens. It is used for orphaned puppies and kittens, large litters, and young animals that need extra feeds while weaning.
The maker describes it as a weaning formula for puppies over 15 days and kittens over 21 days.
How to Feed
- Mixing. Mix the powder with warm, boiled and cooled water exactly as the pack directs. Too strong a mix can cause diarrhoea.
- Temperature. Feed it at about body temperature. Test a drop on your wrist; it should feel warm, not hot.
- How often. Very young puppies and kittens need small feeds every 2 to 3 hours, including at night. Feeds get bigger and less frequent as they grow.
- Position. Feed them lying on their tummy, never on their back, so milk does not go into the lungs.
Your vet can check that each baby is gaining weight. Weigh them daily on kitchen scales if you can.
How to Use
- Hygiene. Wash and sterilise bottles and teats after every feed.
- Leftovers. Make fresh milk for each feed and throw away what is not drunk within an hour.
- Storage. Close the pack tightly and keep it in a cool, dry place. Use it within the time printed on the pack once opened.
Safety and Precautions
- See a vet. Newborn puppies and kittens that are weak, cold, crying constantly or not gaining weight need a vet straight away.
- Toileting. Very young puppies and kittens cannot pass urine or stools on their own. After each feed, gently rub the belly and bottom with warm, damp cotton.
- Warmth. Keep them warm. A cold baby animal cannot digest milk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I give cow's milk instead?
No. Cow's milk has too much milk sugar and too little fat and protein for puppies and kittens. It often causes diarrhoea.
How long do they need milk?
Most puppies and kittens start lapping soft food at about 3 to 4 weeks. They are usually weaned onto solid food by 6 to 8 weeks.
How much do I give per feed?
Follow the feeding table on the pack for your baby's weight. Your vet can help if a baby is not gaining weight.
