Almost every kitten in India is born with worms, and most adult cats pick them up again. Worming is not a sign that something has gone wrong. It is routine maintenance, like a flea treatment. Buy the Right Drug, Not Just Any Wormer

The two drugs that matter for a cat are praziquantel and pyrantel, and they do different jobs.

• Pyrantel kills roundworm and hookworm. It does not touch tapeworm
• Praziquantel kills tapeworm. It does not do much for roundworm
• Together they cover everything a house cat normally gets. That is why almost every proper cat wormer contains both, sometimes with febantel or oxantel added

So check the ingredients, not the packet. A pyrantel-only syrup is a fine roundworm treatment and useless against the tapeworm segments you found in the bedding. If the box does not say praziquantel, it will not clear tapeworm.

Three Things Never to Give a Cat

• A dog's wormer. Dose strengths and some ingredients differ, and a cat is not a small dog. Buy a product labelled for cats
• A human wormer from the chemist. Human albendazole tablets are cheap and easy to find, and they are associated with bone marrow problems in cats. Cats are not small people either
• A livestock product. Cattle wormers come in boluses and litre bottles at concentrations meant for a 400 kg animal. Guessing a cat's share of that is how cats get poisoned

And weigh your cat before you dose it. Not last month's weight, not an estimate. Every one of these products is dosed by body weight, and a kitten changes weight fast. If you are not sure, bring the cat to any of our branches and we will weigh it for you.

Which Worm Does Your Cat Have?

The tapeworm line is the one worth reading twice. Tapeworm in a house cat almost always means fleas. If you treat the tapeworm and not the fleas, the cat swallows another infected flea and the tapeworm is back within weeks. Treat both at once, using a cat flea product alongside the wormer, or you will be buying hookworm medicine for cats and tapeworm tablets on repeat.

Seeing nothing does not mean there is nothing. Most infected cats look completely normal, and hookworm in particular is usually invisible until the cat is anaemic. Routine worming exists precisely because you cannot go by what you can see.

Worms in Cats Can Pass to People

This is the part most Indian pet sites leave out and it is the honest reason to keep to a schedule.

Cat roundworm eggs can infect humans, and children are most at risk because they play where cats go and put hands in mouths. In people the larvae wander through tissue rather than settling in the gut, and in rare cases they reach the eye. Hookworm larvae can burrow into human skin and cause an itchy tracking rash on the feet.

None of this is a reason to panic and it is not common. It is a reason to worm on time, wash hands after the litter tray, cover children's sandpits, and clean the tray daily. If you have a small child and a new kitten in the same house, that is the strongest single argument for keeping to the kitten schedule below.

How Often: The Deworming Schedule

Commonly recommended in India, and your vet's advice for your cat beats any table on the internet.

You do not need a reason to deworm a cat. Nobody waits to see a worm before brushing a cat's teeth or treating it for fleas, and worming is the same kind of routine job. Deworm on the schedule, not on the evidence.

Why kittens start so young and go so often. Roundworm passes to kittens through the mother's milk, so a kitten can be infected within days of birth. A single dose only kills the worms present that day, not the eggs and larvae still developing. Repeating every two weeks catches each new batch as it matures. Skipping doses is why a kitten that was wormed still has worms.

A monthly dewormer for cats is not usually needed for an adult indoor cat. Every three months is the normal advice. Monthly makes sense for a cat that hunts, a cat in a multi-cat home, or a household with a young child.

Tablets or Liquid?

Liquid deworming for cats is easier for kittens and for cats that fight tablets. A syringe of syrup into the side of the mouth is simpler than a tablet down the throat, and the dose can be measured precisely for a small kitten. The trade-off is taste. Some cats foam and drool, which looks alarming and is usually just a reaction to a bitter taste.

Cat dewormer tablets are smaller doses in a smaller package and are usually cheaper per treatment. They suit an adult cat you can handle. Some are flavoured, though cats are far less easily fooled by flavour than dogs.

Either works. Pick the one you will actually manage to give, because a perfect product that stays in the packet does nothing.

How to Give a Cat a Worming Tablet

1. Weigh the cat and check the dose on the box. Do this before you pick the cat up
2. Wrap the cat in a towel with only the head out. This protects you and calms most cats
3. Tilt the head back gently until the nose points at the ceiling. The jaw relaxes on its own
4. Drop the tablet at the very back of the tongue, as far back as you can reach, then close the mouth
5. Stroke the throat and blow gently on the nose. Both trigger swallowing
6. Follow with a few millilitres of water by syringe. A tablet that sticks in a cat's throat can cause damage
7. Watch for two minutes. Cats are experts at holding a tablet in the cheek and spitting it out when you walk away

If it is not working, do not fight the cat. Switch to the syrup, or bring the cat in and we will give it at the counter. A cat that has been fought once is far harder the next time, and worming is something you will be doing for years.

Over the Counter or Prescription?

Most cat wormers in India are over the counter, including the praziquantel and pyrantel products on this page. You do not need to upload a prescription to buy them from us.

What we do instead is check. Our pharmacist looks at whether the product suits the species, the age and the weight before it ships, and calls you if something does not add up. That is the difference between a pharmacy and a marketplace listing, and it is why an over the counter product is not the same as an unsupervised one.

When to See a Vet Instead

• Pale white or grey gums. That is anaemia and in a kitten with hookworm it can be life threatening
• A kitten that is not growing, or has a swollen belly with visible ribs
• Blood in the stool, or black tarry stool
• Vomiting repeatedly, or continuing diarrhoea after worming
• Worms still visible a week after a full dose. Either the dose was wrong, the drug did not cover that worm, or something else is going on
• Any wobbliness, tremor or drooling after a dose. Bring the packet with you
• A very young, very small, pregnant or already unwell cat. Ask before you dose, not after

Frequently Asked Questions

Dewormer, wormer, deworming medicine, de-worming, worming medicine: are these different?

No. Dewormer, de-wormer, wormer and worming medicine all mean the same thing, and people search all of them. A feline dewormer is simply a wormer made for cats. The only real distinction is which drugs are in it, because that decides which worms it kills.

What is the best worming treatment for cats?

For a house cat, a tablet or syrup containing both praziquantel and pyrantel, because together they cover roundworm, hookworm and tapeworm. There is no single best brand. The best product is the one that contains the right drugs, is dosed to your cat's actual weight, and is given on schedule.

Can I buy cat worm medication over the counter?

Yes. Most cat wormers in India, including the praziquantel and pyrantel tablets and syrups on this page, are OTC and need no prescription from us. We still check that the product suits your cat's species, age and weight before dispatch.

How often should a cat be wormed?

Kittens every two weeks from three to twelve weeks, then monthly to six months. Adult indoor cats every three months. Cats that go outdoors or hunt, every one to three months. A monthly dewormer for cats is usually only needed for hunters, multi-cat homes, or households with a young child.

My cat has rice-like segments near its bottom. What is that?

Tapeworm segments. It means your cat has swallowed an infected flea while grooming, or eaten prey. You need a product containing praziquantel, and you need to treat the fleas at the same time, or the tapeworm comes straight back.

Can I use a dog dewormer or a human one on my cat?

No to both. Dog products are dosed differently and some ingredients are not suitable for cats. Human albendazole tablets are associated with bone marrow problems in cats. Buy a product labelled for cats and dose it by your cat's weight.

Are cat dewormer pills better than liquid?

Neither is better. Liquid is easier for kittens and for cats that fight tablets, and easier to measure for a small body weight. Tablets are usually cheaper per dose and simpler for an adult cat you can handle. Pick the one you will actually manage to give.

Can cat worms infect humans?

Roundworm and hookworm can, and children are most at risk. It is uncommon, and hand washing, daily litter tray cleaning and keeping to the worming schedule handle it. It is the main reason not to let deworming slide when there is a small child in the house.

My cat was wormed and still has worms. Why?

Usually one of three reasons. The dose was calculated on a guessed weight. The drug did not cover that worm, most often a pyrantel-only product against tapeworm. Or the cat was reinfected, which with tapeworm means the fleas were never dealt with.
