Cat Cold Medicine: What Is Safe, What Is Not, and What Actually Helps

Two things before anything else. There is no safe over the counter cat cold medicine, and the human ones in your cupboard are dangerous to cats. And the part almost nobody tells you: with a cat, the blocked nose is not the real danger. The cat not eating is. A cat with a stuffed nose cannot smell its food, and a cat that stops eating for a few days can develop serious liver problems. Everything on this page is built around those two facts.

Why There Is No Over the Counter Cat Cold Medicine

People search for cold medicine for cats and cat medicine for cold expecting something like their own. It does not exist, and the human versions are not a smaller-dose answer.

A Cat Cold Is Usually Cat Flu, and It Is Viral

More than 90 percent of upper respiratory infections in cats are caused by feline herpesvirus or feline calicivirus, or both. That is why there is no pill that cures it, in the same way there is no pill that cures your own cold.

• Feline herpesvirus tends to hit the eyes hard, with runny sore eyes alongside the sneezing
• Feline calicivirus tends to cause ulcers on the tongue and a sore mouth, which is another reason the cat stops eating
• Antibiotics do not treat the virus. A vet prescribes them when a bacterial infection has set in on top, which is common but is a separate decision

Herpesvirus does not leave. Once a cat has had it, the virus stays for life and comes back when the cat is stressed, which is why some cats get a runny eye or a bout of sneezing every time you move house, board them or bring in a new cat. That is not a new infection you have failed to prevent.

The Real Danger: A Cat That Stops Eating

Cats eat with their nose. Block it and food stops smelling of anything, and a cat that cannot smell its food often simply will not eat. Add a sore throat or mouth ulcers on top and it stops entirely.

This is why a cat cold is more serious than a dog cold. A cat that goes without food for a few days, particularly a cat carrying extra weight, can develop fatty liver disease. It turns a two week nuisance into a hospital stay.

So the most useful thing you can buy is not a syrup. It is food the cat can smell.

• Strong smelling wet food, gently warmed to body temperature. Fish in oil, kitten food, anything pungent. Warming is what releases the smell
• Offer little and often rather than a full bowl left down all day
• Clean the nose first, then offer food. A cat that can breathe will eat
• Hand feed or offer from a finger if the cat is not going to the bowl

1. Steam, with nothing added. Sit with the cat in the bathroom with a hot shower running for ten to fifteen minutes, two or three times a day. Never put the cat in the shower, and never add oils, balms or menthol to the steam
2. Wipe the nose and eyes with cotton wool and warm water, as often as needed. Dried discharge blocks the nose and glues the eyelids. Use a fresh piece for each eye
3. Warm the food to body temperature and pick the smelliest thing the cat will accept
4. Keep the cat warm and quiet, in one room, away from the other cats
5. Keep water beside the cat. A congested cat drinks less and dehydrates faster
6. Isolate from other cats. Cat flu spreads easily by sneezing and on your hands. Wash your hands between cats
7. Give any prescribed medicine for the full course, including the eye drops, even after the cat looks better

Most uncomplicated cat flu takes one to three weeks. The sneezing usually improves before the eyes do.

Kitten Cold Medicine: Why Kittens Are Different

A kitten with a cold is a different situation to an adult cat with a cold, and it moves faster. Kittens have almost no reserve. They dehydrate quickly, they get cold quickly, and they stop eating sooner.

• Do not give a kitten anything from a human medicine box. There is no kitten cold medicine that comes off a shelf
• Watch the eyes closely. In very young kittens the eyelids can stick shut over an infection, and that damages the eye. Any kitten with gummed eyes needs a vet, not a wipe
• A kitten that will not feed for even half a day needs to be seen. That is a much shorter fuse than for an adult cat
• Litters and strays are where cat flu is worst, because it spreads between them constantly. If you have taken in a kitten from the street, expect it and get ahead of it

Cough Medicine for Cats, and What a Cough Actually Means

A cold in a cat causes sneezing, not coughing. Sneezing comes from the nose. Coughing comes from the lower airway, and in cats a genuine cough usually means something other than a cold.

• Feline asthma is the most common cause of chronic coughing in cats. It is often mistaken for a cat trying to bring up a hairball, because the posture is almost identical: crouched low, neck stretched out, a dry hacking effort. If your cat does that repeatedly and nothing ever comes up, it is very probably not a hairball

Which is why a cough medicine for cats is rarely the answer, and can be the wrong one. Suppressing a cough that is caused by asthma or fluid does not treat anything and can hide how bad it is getting. Feline asthma is treated with proper drugs, usually through an inhaler and spacer, and that is a vet's diagnosis after listening to the chest and often an x-ray.

Take a video. A ten second phone video of your cat coughing is worth more to your vet than any description, because these episodes never happen in the consulting room.

What About L-Lysine?

We would rather tell you what the evidence says than sell it to you. Lysine has been sold for years as a supplement for herpesvirus in cats. A published systematic review is titled, plainly, "Lysine supplementation is not effective for the prevention or treatment of feline herpesvirus 1 infection in cats", and shelter studies have not found a benefit either.

It is not dangerous, and some owners feel it helps their cat. We are not going to argue with somebody whose cat is doing well. But if you are choosing where to spend, spend it on food the cat will eat and on a vet visit, not on lysine.

• Vaccinate. The risk of upper respiratory infection is dramatically reduced by vaccination against feline herpesvirus and calicivirus. It does not always prevent infection outright, but it makes it far milder
• Quarantine new cats for a week or two before they meet the resident cats
