Never give a cat paracetamol. It is sold as Dolo, Crocin, Calpol, Metacin, Panadol, Tylenol and acetaminophen, and every one of them will do the same thing.
Cats are missing enough of a liver enzyme that people and dogs use to break the drug down safely. Without it, the drug turns into a compound that damages red blood cells and stops the blood carrying oxygen. A single ordinary human tablet can kill an average cat. There is no home remedy and waiting does not help.
Signs of paracetamol poisoning in a cat, usually within one to twelve hours:

Why NSAIDs for cats are a vet decision and not a shop decision. The safe amount for a cat is a fraction of a human tablet, the gap between a helping dose and a harmful one is narrow, and a cat with early kidney disease, which is very common in older cats and often silent, is exactly the cat you must not give one to without checking. Your vet is not being difficult. They are protecting the kidneys.
Never give leftovers. Not the dog's meloxicam, not last year's bottle, not the neighbour's cat's tablets. A pet pain medication is prescribed for one animal at one weight for one problem.
Natural Pain Relief for Cats: What Helps, What Does Nothing, and What Is Dangerous

How to Tell If Your Cat Is in Pain
Cats hide pain. It is instinct, not stoicism, and it is the single reason feline pain gets missed for months. A purring cat can be in severe pain. Purring is not proof of comfort.
Look at the face. There is a free, properly validated tool called the Feline Grimace Scale, developed at the University of Montreal, with a free app for iPhone and Android. It scores five things: ear position, tightness around the eyes, tension in the muzzle, whisker direction and head position. It takes under a minute and it is the best thing an owner can use at home.
Look at the behaviour. Any of these that is new is worth a call:
