Simparica Trio is a once-a-month chewable tablet for dogs from Zoetis. This pack holds one tablet for dogs weighing 20 to 40kg. It combines three medicines, sarolaner, moxidectin and pyrantel, so one tablet covers several common parasites.

According to Zoetis's product label, Simparica Trio kills adult fleas and treats and prevents flea infestations, treats and controls ticks including the brown dog tick, prevents heartworm disease, and treats and controls roundworms and hookworms. By killing fleas, it also helps prevent flea tapeworm, which dogs pick up by swallowing infected fleas.

How It Works

• Sarolaner. Absorbed into the blood. When fleas and ticks feed, it blocks their nerve signals and kills them.
• Moxidectin. Kills heartworm larvae passed on by mosquitoes before they can grow into adult worms in the heart.
• Pyrantel. Paralyses roundworms and hookworms in the gut so they are passed out in the stool.

How to Use

• Check the weight. Weigh your dog before buying. This tablet is for dogs of 20 to 40kg. Dogs above the top band need a combination of tablets your vet works out.
• Give the tablet. Offer the chewable by hand or in a little food. Make sure your dog eats the whole tablet, and watch for a few minutes to be sure none is spat out.
• Every month. Give one dose every month on the same date. Zoetis advises that a missed dose be given straight away, then monthly dosing resumed.
• Heartworm plan. For heartworm prevention, Zoetis advises giving it year-round, or at least from one month before mosquito season until one month after it ends.
• Storage. Store in a cool, dry place in the original pack. Keep out of reach of children and pets, as the chewable is flavoured.

Safety and Precautions

• Zoetis's US label states it is for dogs 8 weeks of age and older weighing at least 1.3kg (2.8 lb). Check the age and weight limits on the Indian pack with your vet.
• Sarolaner belongs to the isoxazoline group. This group has been linked to tremors, wobbliness and seizures in some dogs. Tell your vet if your dog has ever had a seizure.
• Your vet should test for heartworm before starting. Prevention does not cure an existing heartworm infection.
• Do not give to cats. Simparica Trio is made for dogs only.
• Ask your vet before use in breeding, pregnant or nursing dogs.
