    Is hip dysplasia common in cats?
    No it is less common in cats than in dogs. But it does occur, and in certain breeds, particularly Maine Coons, it is a documented and real risk. Many cats with hip dysplasia go undiagnosed because the signs are subtle and easily attributed to "age" or "personality." The true prevalence in cats may be higher than currently recognised simply because most cats are not screened with hip X-rays.

    My cat is not limping can it still have hip dysplasia?
    Yes. Most cats with hip dysplasia never show obvious limping. The more reliable signs are behavioural: reluctance to jump, avoiding high surfaces, litter box changes, reduced grooming of the hindquarters, and irritability when the hips or lower back are touched. Cats distribute weight across four limbs very effectively, making unilateral lameness much harder to detect than in dogs or humans.

    My Maine Coon is 2 years old and seems fine. Should I get hip X-rays anyway?

    Can I give my cat glucosamine supplements without seeing a vet first?

    What is FHO surgery and when is it needed?

    My cat has been eliminating outside the litter box. Could hip pain be the cause?

When a cat with hip dysplasia finds that squatting to eliminate or stepping over a high-sided litter box edge is painful, it may begin eliminating nearby instead. This is not a behaviour problem or spite. It is a pain communication.
