Large Breed Puppy Food Is Not the Same as Puppy Food

This is the single most important choice on this page, and most owners get it wrong.

A Labrador puppy fed standard puppy food grows too fast. Regular puppy formulas are calorie and calcium dense, which suits a small breed that finishes growing in ten months. A large breed spends eighteen months to two years growing, and pushing that growth faster than the skeleton can handle is a known cause of joint problems that show up years later as hip and elbow trouble.

Large breed puppy formulas are deliberately less rich, with controlled calcium and a tighter calcium to phosphorus ratio. Slower, steadier growth is the goal, not a bigger puppy sooner.

The rule is simple. If your puppy will weigh more than 25kg as an adult, feed a large breed puppy formula. Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Boxer, Doberman, Great Dane, most Indies of that build. If your puppy will stay under 25kg, standard puppy food is right.

Which Arden Grange Recipe Suits Your Dog?

• Chicken & Rice is the default. Most healthy adult dogs do well on it and it is the easiest place to start.
• Salmon & Rice if the coat is dull or the skin is dry. The fish oils help, and salmon is also a useful alternative protein for a dog that has been eating chicken for years.
• Sensitive if there are recurring loose stools, itching or ear problems that have not settled on a normal food. This is the line built for reactive dogs.
• Mini if you have a small breed. Same food, smaller kibble, which matters more than it sounds for a Shih Tzu or a Pug.
• Prestige if your dog is genuinely active, working or struggling to hold weight.
• Weaning Puppy for puppies just off milk, usually from around four weeks.

Is It Genuine, and How Fresh Is It?

Switching Your Dog to Arden Grange
