Antidiarrheal Medications for Cats: Start Here, Not With a Tablet
The honest headline is that most antidiarrhoeal drugs either do not work, or should not be given until you know what is causing the diarrhoea, and the ones in your own medicine cabinet are the most dangerous of all.
What is genuinely worth buying on day one of a cat with loose stools, and it is cheap: an oral rehydration powder. Venlyte Pet Powder at ₹40 or an ORS sachet. Fluid and electrolyte loss is what actually harms a cat with diarrhoea, and replacing it is the intervention that helps while the gut settles. A probiotic is a reasonable second purchase. Everything else on this page waits for a diagnosis.
Three things before you give a cat anything for diarrhoea.
Never give a cat a human antidiarrhoeal, and Pepto-Bismol style products are the worst of them. Bismuth subsalicylate is a salicylate, which is aspirin's family, and Merck Veterinary Manual is direct about the pharmacology: "practically, all of the salicylate from bismuth subsalicylate is absorbed systemically when administered to dogs and cats", and "Salicylate toxicosis is possible, especially in cats". The reason is a metabolic one, and it is the same reason cats cannot handle paracetamol: "Cats are deficient in the glucuronyl transferase enzyme and have a prolonged excretion of aspirin", with an aspirin half-life in cats of 37.5 hours. Merck's summary is four words long: "Cats are very susceptible to aspirin." To put a number on it, a toxicologist quoted by dvm360 calculated that one tablespoon of extra-strength Kaopectate given to a 5lb cat delivers roughly 100 mg/kg of aspirin equivalent, which "would likely result in toxicosis".
Do not stop the diarrhoea before you know why it is happening. This is counter-intuitive and it matters. Merck on opioid antidiarrhoeals: "Opiates are contraindicated in infectious diarrhea because slowing the GI transit time may increase the absorption of bacterial toxins." Diarrhoea is partly how a body clears an infection. Plugging it can trap the problem inside. The same source notes that opioid use in cats "is controversial because they may cause excitement", which is a separate reason again.
A kitten with diarrhoea is a different situation from an adult cat with diarrhoea. Kittens dehydrate fast and feline panleukopenia is a real risk in unvaccinated ones. Merck: "Kittens are affected most severely", "Kittens under 5 months of age are most likely to die from panleukopenia virus infection", and vomiting typically follows fever within a day or two. If you have a kitten with diarrhoea, particularly one that is unvaccinated, off its food or lethargic, that is a same-day veterinary visit rather than a syrup.

Notice how many rows say vet. That is not us dodging. Diarrhoea is a sign rather than a disease, and the useful question is always what is causing it.
Why Rehydration Is the Purchase That Helps
If the cat only gets one thing from this page, make it this one.
Diarrhoea harms an animal by taking water and electrolytes out of it faster than it can replace them. That is the mechanism, and it is why a small cat gets into trouble faster than a large dog. Merck's assessment of kaolin-pectin, the old standby, makes the point by contrast: "it may change the consistency of the feces, but it neither decreases the fluid or electrolyte loss nor shortens the duration of illness". A firmer stool that has cost the same fluid is a cosmetic result.
An oral rehydration powder replaces both. Venlyte Pet Powder at ₹40 and the ORS sachets are the cheapest genuinely useful things in this whole collection, and they belong in the cupboard before you need them rather than bought at 10pm.
Practical notes. Mix to the label and offer it as the drinking water, alongside plain water rather than instead of it. Do not force fluid by syringe into a cat that is fighting you, because aspiration is a real risk and a stressed cat drinks less afterwards. If a cat will not take fluids and is still losing them, that is the point where it needs fluids under the skin at a clinic, and no powder substitutes for that.
Metronidazole for Cats: The Drug People Ask For By Name
Metronidazole is the most requested item in this category and we stock nine versions of it. We are still going to say what the current guidance says.
The 2024 ENOVAT guidelines on antimicrobial use in canine acute diarrhoea state that antimicrobials "are not recommended for dogs with mild-moderate CAD, both haemorrhagic and non-haemorrhagic", and are reserved for "dogs with severe CAD (pyrexic or non-responsive to fluids)". Those are canine guidelines and we are quoting them as such, because the equivalent feline document is thinner. The principle they rest on is not species specific: most acute diarrhoea resolves without an antibiotic, and giving one has a cost.
That cost is the gut microbiome. As the same review notes, "Negative dysbiosis consequences of antibiotics can persist for months after administration." A cat given metronidazole for three days of loose stools may carry a disturbed gut population for far longer than the diarrhoea would have lasted.
So where does it belong? When a vet has a reason: a diagnosed protozoal infection, an inflammatory bowel disease protocol, a severely unwell animal. Not as a first response to soft stool, and not from a previous course left in a drawer.

Worms and Protozoa: The Cause People Skip Past
Before you spend anything on a syrup, the cheapest question worth answering is whether something is living in the cat's gut. It is a common answer and a treatable one.
Cornell Feline Health Center: "Gastrointestinal (GI) parasitism is a common problem in cats, with prevalence rates as high as 45% in some populations." Roundworms alone affect "25% to 75% of cats, with higher rates in kittens".
Several of them present as exactly the problem that brought you here. Hookworms cause "diarrhea and weight loss". Coccidia "can cause significant disease in kittens, where the coccidia may destroy the lining of the intestine and cause mucousy diarrhea". Giardia causes "acute or chronic diarrhea", with the twist that "the majority of Giardia-infected cats show no signs", which is how one cat in a household infects the others quietly.
The diagnosis is a faecal test, and it is one of the cheapest tests in veterinary medicine. Cornell notes that for Giardia in particular "several fecal samples may need to be evaluated", so a single negative does not always settle it.
Two things follow. First, a cat with diarrhoea that has not been wormed recently should have a faecal test before anyone reaches for an antibiotic. Second, deworming is not a one-off. One more reason to take this seriously. Cornell lists Toxocara, Ancylostoma, some tapeworms and Toxoplasma as parasites that can infect people. A cat with untreated intestinal parasites is a household issue, not only a cat issue, and that matters most in homes with small children.
How to collect the sample, since we keep telling people to get one. Take a fresh scoop from the tray, ideally within a few hours, into a clean container or a zip bag rather than folded into paper. Keep it in the fridge, not the freezer, until you go in. Litter stuck to it is fine and normal. If the diarrhoea is intermittent, collect on a day it is happening rather than a day it is not, because that is the sample that shows something. And take a photo of the stool as well, because colour and mucus tell a vet things a sealed bag does not.

Bland Feeding, Done Properly
The part that costs nothing and that people get slightly wrong.
Do not starve a cat. The old advice to withhold food for 24 hours came from dog medicine and it is dangerous in cats, because a cat that stops eating for a few consecutive days risks hepatic lipidosis, a fatty liver, which is treated with weeks of tube feeding. Offer small amounts of something bland and appealing rather than nothing.
Small and often. A tablespoon every few hours sits better than a bowl twice a day when a gut is inflamed.
Bland means low fat and simple. Boiled chicken without skin, or a plain wet food the cat already likes. No milk, no cheese, no butter, no ghee.
Go back to normal food gradually. Over three or four days once stools have firmed, mixing an increasing proportion in.
If a cat refuses everything for 24 hours, that changes the plan. It becomes a veterinary problem rather than a home one, for the reason above.
