What Is the Best Cat Cold Medicine?
There is no safe over-the-counter cold medicine for cats, and most cat colds do not need medicine at all.
What people call a cat cold is a feline upper respiratory infection. Around 80 to 90 percent of these are viral, caused by feline herpesvirus or feline calicivirus. Antibiotics do nothing against a virus. Most mild cases clear on their own in 7 to 10 days with warmth, hydration, food your cat can smell, and steam to loosen a blocked nose.
Medicine becomes necessary when the cause is bacterial, when a secondary bacterial infection develops on top of the virus, or when the cat is a kitten, elderly, or already unwell. Only a vet can tell which of these you are dealing with, and that is the whole reason there is no shelf product for it.

Never Give a Cat Human Cold Medicine
Paracetamol kills cats. Cats lack the liver enzyme that breaks it down, and a single 500mg tablet can kill an average adult cat. There is no safe dose. Almost every human cold and flu product sold in India contains paracetamol, including Crocin, Sinarest, D-Cold, Vicks Action 500 and Coldarin.
Also unsafe:

Decongestants such as pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine. These cause dangerously high blood pressure, racing heart and seizures in cats.

Aspirin. Cats clear it extremely slowly, so it builds up to toxic levels.

Ibuprofen. Causes kidney damage and stomach ulcers in cats, sometimes after one dose.

Vapour rubs and essential oils. Camphor and eucalyptus are toxic to cats, and a cat will groom off anything you apply to its fur and swallow it.

Leftover antibiotics from another pet or person. Wrong drug, wrong dose, and a half-course breeds resistant bacteria.

Is It a Cold, or Something Else?
Feline upper respiratory infection is the usual answer, but the signs overlap with other conditions, and treating the wrong one wastes days you may not have.
Viral upper respiratory infection
Sneezing, watery eyes, clear nasal discharge, mild fever, reduced appetite. Caused by feline herpesvirus or calicivirus. Extremely contagious between cats. Herpesvirus stays in the body for life and flares during stress, such as a house move, a new pet or boarding. Antibiotics will not touch it.
Secondary bacterial infection
Starts as the above, then the discharge turns thick, yellow or green, and the cat gets worse rather than better after a few days. This is when antibiotics genuinely help, and it is the most common legitimate reason a vet prescribes them for a cat cold.
Primary bacterial infection
Chlamydia felis, Bordetella and Mycoplasma can cause respiratory illness directly. Chlamydia often shows as a heavily inflamed eye on one side first. These respond well to the right antibiotic, usually doxycycline.
Mouth ulcers and drooling
Ulcers on the tongue or gums point to calicivirus. A cat with mouth ulcers stops eating because it hurts, not because it cannot smell. This needs a vet.
Not a cold at all
Persistent sneezing in one nostril can mean a grass seed, a polyp or a dental root problem. Coughing rather than sneezing may be asthma or heartworm, not infection. Open-mouth breathing is never a cold sign in cats and is an emergency.
Can I Buy Antibiotics for Cats Over the Counter?
No. In India, antibiotics are Schedule H drugs and legally require a prescription from a registered practitioner. That applies to veterinary antibiotics exactly as it does to human ones. Any seller offering them without a prescription is breaking the law, and no licensed pharmacy will do it.
The rule exists for reasons that matter to your cat specifically:

The wrong antibiotic does nothing. Different drugs work on different bacteria. Guessing wastes a week while the infection progresses.

The dose is weight-based and species-specific. Cats are not small dogs. Several antibiotics safe in dogs are not safe in cats.

Short courses breed resistance. Stopping when the cat looks better leaves the toughest bacteria alive. The next infection is harder to treat.

Antibiotics for Cats: What Vets Actually Prescribe
You will see these names on prescriptions, and knowing what they are for helps you understand the plan your vet has made.

Doxycycline (stocked as Doxypet and Zedox). The usual first choice for feline respiratory infections, and the drug of choice for Chlamydia and Mycoplasma. Must be given with water or food to avoid irritating the throat.

Amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanate (stocked as Toxo-Mox). Broad-spectrum, widely used for skin, wound, dental and urinary infections.

Cephalexin (stocked as Lixen). Common for skin and soft tissue infections.

Enrofloxacin (stocked as Bayrocin, Meriquin). Reserved for specific infections. Dose in cats must be strictly controlled, because too high a dose can damage the retina.

Topical antibiotics (stocked as Pendistrin-SH). For localised wounds. Fit a cone, because a cat will groom off whatever you apply.
Finish the full course even after your cat looks well. Stopping early is the most common reason an infection returns worse than before.
Antibiotics for Kittens
Kittens need more caution, not less, and never a guessed dose.
A kitten with a cold can go downhill in hours rather than days. The bigger danger is usually not the infection itself but the knock-on effect: a blocked nose means a kitten cannot smell its food, and a kitten that stops eating becomes seriously ill very quickly. A kitten that has not eaten in 24 hours is a vet visit today, not tomorrow.
Some antibiotics also carry age-specific risks in growing animals. Tetracyclines can stain developing teeth, and certain other classes can affect developing cartilage. Which antibiotic is appropriate depends on the kitten's exact age and weight, which is a calculation for a vet, not a label.
Never split an adult cat's tablet for a kitten. The dose is not proportional and tablets are not always safe to divide.
Antifungal Treatment for Cats
Fungal infections are not bacterial, so antibiotics do nothing for them. The most common one in cats is ringworm, which despite the name is a fungus, not a worm.
Signs: circular patches of hair loss, scaly or crusty skin, broken hairs, often around the face, ears and paws. Kittens and long-haired cats are most affected.
Ringworm spreads to humans, especially children and anyone with a weakened immune system. That alone makes a proper diagnosis worth it rather than guessing from a photo online.
What works: the evidence-based topical treatment is a medicated shampoo or rinse containing miconazole with chlorhexidine, used across the whole coat rather than dabbed on visible patches, because spores spread further than the lesions you can see. Severe or widespread cases need an oral antifungal such as itraconazole, on prescription. Treatment usually runs for weeks, and your vet will want to confirm it has actually cleared rather than just looks clear.
Why human antifungal creams are not a substitute: cats groom constantly and will swallow whatever you put on their fur. A cream formulated for human skin is not formulated to be eaten. Use products meant for cats.

What You Can Safely Do at Home Today
For a mild cold in an otherwise healthy adult cat, supportive care is genuinely most of the treatment.

Steam. Sit with your cat in the bathroom for 10 to 15 minutes with a hot shower running. It loosens a blocked nose and it is completely safe. Do not use any vapour additive.

Wipe the eyes and nose. Warm damp cotton, gently, several times a day. A crusted nose is a nose that cannot breathe or smell.

Warm the food. This is the most useful trick on this list. Cats eat by smell, and gently warming wet food makes it smell far stronger. A blocked cat that will not touch cold food will often eat warmed food.

Keep water available and close by. A sick cat will not walk far for it.

Keep the cat warm and rested, indoors, in a quiet spot.

Isolate from other cats. Feline URI is very contagious. Wash your hands between cats.

Reduce stress. Herpesvirus flares are often triggered by stress, so a calm environment genuinely helps recovery.
When to See a Vet Straight Away
Do not wait it out if you see any of these:

Not eating for 24 hours. Cats develop serious liver problems quickly when they stop eating. This is the single most important sign on this list.

Open-mouth breathing, laboured breathing or panting. This is an emergency in cats. Go now.

Thick yellow or green discharge from the nose or eyes.
- Ulcers in the mouth, or drooling.
