Canine Medications Online: How This Actually Works

Animeal is the online arm of Goodman Pet Chemist, a licensed veterinary pharmacy with four branches in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. That matters more here than on any other page on this site, because most of what follows is prescription medicine and we dispense it the way a pharmacy does.

The process is short. Find what your vet prescribed, add it, and upload a photograph of the prescription at checkout. Most medicines cannot be sold without one under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and the Rules of 1945, and our checkout asks. If you cannot find the item, send us the prescription on WhatsApp and we will locate it or tell you honestly that we do not have it.

Three things before you order anything, and the first one saves lives.

Never give a dog a human painkiller. Not paracetamol, not ibuprofen, not aspirin, not a combination cold tablet. Merck Veterinary Manual on ibuprofen: "GI irritation or ulceration, GI hemorrhage, and renal damage are the most commonly reported toxic effects", and "Use of ibuprofen is no longer recommended in dogs". On aspirin: "Respiratory alkalosis, followed by metabolic acidosis, gastric irritation or ulceration, liver necrosis, coma, seizures, or prolonged bleeding, can occur". Paracetamol causes methaemoglobinaemia and liver damage, and cats are catastrophically more sensitive than dogs, with signs reported in some cats at 10 mg/kg. You will find human medicines in this catalogue, including paracetamol. They are here because vets occasionally direct their use in ways we are not going to second guess. They are not for you to give a dog on your own judgement, and if you are looking at one wondering whether it will help, the answer is to message us or your vet first.

A dog with a "stomach ache" may have something that kills in hours. Gastric dilatation and volvulus, which people call bloat, is described by Cornell as "a life-threatening condition that occurs suddenly when the stomach fills with air, fluid, or food, becomes distended, and twists on itself", and "without medical and surgical intervention, GDV is fatal". The sign that should send you straight out of the door is "non-productive retching or attempting to vomit with no production", along with a bloated or painful belly, drooling, pacing, pale gums or collapse. Deep chested breeds are at highest risk. Our Parel branch is open 24 hours. Do not order anything, and do not wait until morning.

Heart pills are prescribed off imaging, not off symptoms. The ACVIM consensus guidelines put pimobendan at stage B2 of mitral valve disease, and stage B2 is defined by numbers you cannot see from the sofa: an echocardiographic left atrium to aorta ratio above 1.6, a normalised left ventricular diameter above 1.7, and a breed-adjusted vertebral heart score above 10.5 on radiographs. The guidelines are explicit that where radiographs do not meet the criteria, "an echocardiogram should be performed prior to the initiation of therapy". A coughing dog is not automatically a heart dog, and starting a cardiac drug without that workup can mean treating the wrong disease.

How to Order a Prescription Medicine

Step What to do
1 Photograph the prescription clearly, including the dog's name, the drug, the strength and the vet's signature
2 Search the exact drug name rather than the condition. Brand names differ between manufacturers
3 Check the strength before adding to cart. A 1.25mg and a 5mg tablet of the same drug are different products
4 Upload the prescription at checkout
5 If anything is unclear or out of stock, message us the prescription and we will tell you the same day

Two things that save time. Send us the dog's weight along with the prescription, because it lets us catch a strength mismatch before it ships. And if your vet wrote a molecule rather than a brand, say so, since we usually carry more than one brand of the same drug at different prices.

Never Give a Dog These

This list is not exhaustive and it is the part of the page we would most like you to remember.

Human medicine What it does to a dog
Paracetamol, acetaminophen Methaemoglobinaemia and liver damage. Far worse in cats, where signs have been reported at 10 mg/kg
Ibuprofen Gastrointestinal ulceration, gastrointestinal haemorrhage and kidney damage. No longer recommended in dogs at all
Aspirin Acid base disturbance, gastric ulceration, liver necrosis, seizures, prolonged bleeding
Combination cold and flu tablets Usually contain paracetamol plus other actives. Two problems in one tablet
Any leftover tablet from a previous pet Wrong dog, wrong weight, wrong diagnosis, and often expired

The signs of a poisoning are worth knowing because they are vague: "listlessness, weakness, anorexia, vomiting with or without blood, hyperthermia, and hyperpnea". If your dog has swallowed a human tablet, do not wait for signs. Ring us or a vet with the strength and the number of tablets, and go in.

There are proper canine painkillers, and we stock them. Meloxicam, carprofen and gabapentin are all here, all prescription, all dosed for the species. Ask for those rather than reaching into your own cupboard.

Medicine for Dog Stomach Ache: What It Might Actually Be

This is one of the commonest things people search, and it covers everything from a raided dustbin to a surgical emergency. Work out which end of the range you are at before you buy.

What you are seeing What to do
Unproductive retching, bloated or painful belly, drooling, pacing, pale gums Emergency. Go now. Parel is open 24 hours
Repeated vomiting, blood in vomit or stool, black tarry stool Vet the same day. Do not give an antacid and wait
Vomiting plus known access to a toy, bone, cloth or string Vet the same day. Obstruction is surgical and time matters
Puppy with diarrhoea, off food, unvaccinated Vet the same day. Puppies dehydrate fast and parvovirus is common in Mumbai
One episode of vomiting, dog otherwise bright, eating and drinking Withhold food for a few hours, offer water, watch. Vet if it repeats
Soft stool for a day or two, dog well in itself Bland food and a probiotic is reasonable. Vet if it goes past 48 hours

Our gastrointestinal and digestive collection for dogs runs to 154 products with 65 in stock, and includes antiemetics, gut protectants, probiotics and rehydration. Most of the useful ones are prescription. What is not on that list is a human antacid or a human antidiarrhoeal, and we would rather you did not improvise with those.

Heart Pills for Dogs: What You Are Actually Buying

Our cardiac collection for dogs holds 68 products with 28 in stock. Three families cover most prescriptions and it helps to know which yours is.

Pimobendan improves the strength of the heart's contraction and opens the vessels. It is the drug the ACVIM guidelines start at stage B2, before any signs appear. We carry it as Pimoben from ₹159.37, Petmedin from ₹591.30, Safeheart from ₹603.27 and Freossi Frepico at ₹2,109.37. Same molecule, very different prices, so it is worth asking us to compare on strength per rupee before a long course.

ACE inhibitors, mainly benazepril, reduce the load on the heart and are also used for protein loss in kidney disease. Aceptor 5 is ₹70.31 and Aceptor 10 is ₹89.06.

Diuretics, which remove fluid once heart failure is present. These are the ones where dose changes are frequent and where bloods get monitored, so follow the vet's instruction rather than a fixed habit.

One honest note on price. The spread between the cheapest and dearest pimobendan here is more than tenfold. Where the molecule and the strength match, ask us which is the same medicine at a lower price. Cardiac treatment runs for years and the difference adds up.

Antibiotics: The Ones We Are Strictest About

We sell antibiotics on prescription and we are going to be tiresome about them, because the harm from casual use is slow, invisible and shared.

The American Veterinary Medical Association puts the stake plainly: "Antimicrobial resistance threatens animal health and welfare, food production, and public health, and can impact the results of biomedical research." And on the practical side: "Proper antimicrobial use optimizes therapeutic efficacy, enhances treatment success, and minimizes resistance to antimicrobials."

What that means for you, in four rules.

Do not start an antibiotic without a diagnosis. Most dog diarrhoea, most coughs and a good share of skin problems are not bacterial, and an antibiotic given to a dog that does not need one does nothing for the dog while doing something to everyone's bacteria.

Give the dose and the duration your vet set. Not fewer days because the dog looks better, not more days because you have tablets left. If the course seems to be failing, ring the vet rather than adjusting it yourself.

Do not keep leftovers for next time. Different infection, different bug, possibly a different animal, and the tablets are usually out of date by the time they are reached for. Bring unused antibiotics back to a branch and we will dispose of them.

Do not share between animals. A dose calculated for a 30kg Labrador is not a dose for a 4kg Shih Tzu, and some antibiotics that are routine in dogs are not appropriate in cats.

If a vet has taken a culture and told you which antibiotic the bug is sensitive to, that is the one to buy, even if we have something cheaper on the shelf. Send us the culture report along with the prescription and we will match it exactly.

Giving and Storing Dog Tablets

A prescription only works if the medicine gets into the dog and stays good until the course ends. Both of those fail more often than people admit.

Getting it in. Most dogs take a tablet hidden in something strongly flavoured, given as the second of three quick treats so the dog swallows before it inspects. If the dog spits it out reliably, ask us whether the drug comes as a liquid or a chewable, because many do. Do not crush a tablet without asking, since some are coated to survive the stomach and crushing them destroys the medicine or the dog's tolerance of it.

With food or without. It matters more than people think and it is usually printed on the box. Some drugs are absorbed far better on an empty stomach and others irritate the stomach if given without food. If the prescription does not say, ask rather than guessing.

Storing it in Mumbai. Humidity is the enemy of tablets. Keep them in the original strip or bottle rather than a pill box, out of the bathroom and the kitchen, and away from a window. If a medicine says refrigerate, that means the body of the fridge and not the door, where the temperature swings every time it opens.

Reconstituted liquids expire fast. Antibiotic syrups made up with water are usually good for a week or two refrigerated and then must be discarded, whatever the printed expiry on the bottle says. That date applies to the powder.

Check the strip before every dose. Two tablets of similar size from different strips is how the wrong drug gets given, and it happens most often in households treating more than one animal at the same time.

What Is in This Collection

This page is a hub rather than a single grid. It holds twenty-two child collections, and the right one is usually a click away.

The larger ones, measured: wound and pain relief runs 227 products with 105 in stock. Gastrointestinal and digestive care is 154 with 65. Fleas and ticks is 106 with 67. Cardiac care is 68 with 28.

Also here: allergy relief, antibiotics, anxiety care, cancer care, dewormers, diabetes, eye and ear care, hip and joint, injectables, liver care, neural care, pre and post natal care, respiratory, skin and coat, thyroid, urinary and renal care, and vaccines.

Search by the drug name your vet wrote. Searching by condition brings back everything from a shampoo to an injection, and the drug name is the only thing that reliably lands on the right product.

Order From the Counter

Goodman Pet Chemist runs four branches and moves stock between them.

  • Parel, open 24 hours, which is the one that matters at 2am
  • Mahim
  • Sewri
  • Seawoods, Navi Mumbai

For anything urgent, come in or call rather than ordering. A dog that is collapsed, retching without producing, bleeding, seizing, struggling to breathe or unable to urinate needs a vet, not a delivery.

Questions We Get at the Counter

Can I buy canine medications online without a prescription?
Not for prescription medicines. Our checkout asks for one, as the Drugs and Cosmetics Act requires. Over the counter items such as supplements, shampoos and some parasite products do not need one.

Can I give my dog paracetamol for pain?
No. It causes methaemoglobinaemia and liver damage, and there are proper canine painkillers we can dispense on a prescription instead. If your dog has already had some, ring us or your vet now with the strength and the number of tablets.

What is the best medicine for dog stomach ache?
There is no single one, because "stomach ache" covers a raided bin and a twisted stomach. Read the table above. If there is unproductive retching or a bloated painful abdomen, go to a vet immediately.

Are your dog tablets the same as the ones my vet gives?
Usually yes when the molecule and strength match, though the brand may differ. Send us the prescription and we will tell you which of our brands is the same medicine.

How do I know which heart pills for dogs my dog needs?
From an echocardiogram and radiographs, not from symptoms. The staging that decides whether a dog starts pimobendan uses heart measurements, and that is a specialist call.

My vet wrote a molecule, not a brand. What do I order?
Send us the prescription. We often carry several brands of the same molecule at different prices and we will show you the options.

Can I use last year's leftover tablets?
Please do not. Different dog, different weight, possibly a different problem, and antibiotics in particular do harm when used as a partial course.

Do you deliver prescription medicine?
Yes, once a valid prescription is uploaded and verified. Genuine emergencies should come to a branch instead, because delivery time is time your dog may not have.
